..Cooler Air Arrives Tomorrow...

While today will be another hot and dry day for Alabama, we are all looking
forward to a rare August cold front, which is expected to pass all the way
through the state tomorrow.

The front will bring a few scattered showers and possibly a strong
thunderstorm during the day tomorrow, and then a nice surge of cooler and
drier continental air from Canada. While you won't need sweaters and
jackets, we are expecting early morning low temperatures to drop into the
upper 50s in many areas by early Saturday morning. I expect to see a number
of new record low temperatures across the southeast U.S. on Saturday, and
possibly Sunday as well. During the day, humidity values will remain low,
and afternoon temperatures will be about five degrees below normal for early
August in Alabama. The dry air also means no chance of rain Friday through
the weekend.

TROPICS: Hurricane Alex is moving away from the U.S. mainland after brushing
by the Outer Banks of North Carolina yesterday, and will slowly weaken over
the colder water of the north Atlantic over the next few days.
Elsewhere, tropical depression two is moving through the Windward Islands
this morning, and should strengthen into tropical storm Bonnie at some point
today over the far eastern Caribbean. This system should turn to the north
by the end of the week in response to the deep eastern U.S. trough (the same
one that will bring us cooler air), and it is not a threat for the Gulf of
Mexico.

OZONE ALERT: A code orange ozone alert is in effect again today for the
Birmingham metro area, meaning air quality is expected to be unhealthy for
sensitive groups. Air quality will improve greatly tomorrow.
