..The Heat Cranks Up Again...

Sizzling summer heat headlines our forecast for the next two days, but
relief is in sight by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to
reach the mid 90s today and tomorrow, with little if any chance of a cooling
afternoon shower.

Later in the week, a major mid-summer trough forms over the eastern states
in the upper atmosphere, and will drive a rare August cold front through
Alabama on Thursday. A few showers and strong storms are likely during the
front's passage, followed by a very unusual breath of Canadian air for
Friday and the weekend.

Don't get out the sweaters and jackets, but we are expecting highs only in
the 80s, lower humidity, and cooler nights. We will be flirting with new
record lows around here both Saturday and Sunday morning, and some of the
cooler valleys should wind up in the upper 50s. A nice preview of the fall
season.

ALEX: Hurricane warnings are up for the outer banks of North Carolina today
as Alex approaches from the south. The system is expected to reach minimal
hurricane status at anytime as it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf
stream. Tomorrow Alex will accelerate to the northeast, out into the open
waters of the Atlantic.

BONNIE? A strong tropical wave about 500 miles east of the Windward Islands
could become a tropical depression today, and tropical Bonnie at some point
during the mid-week period. This system should ultimately turn northward
late this week in response to the developing eastern U.S. trough, and is not
expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico or the U.S. mainland.

HODGEPODGE: Richmond, VA was soaked with 2.03" of rain yesterday. National
hot spot was Death Valley, CA with 114.
