...Air Quality Alert...

GOOD MORNING! We have a Code Orange Air Quality Alert today here in
Jefferson and Shelby Counties. The AQI for today will be above 100, meaning
the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with lung
ailments, the very young and the elderly. These groups should limit
prolonged exposure outside and avoid outdoor exertion. The Air Quality
Index is forecast to be in the yellow category on Sunday.

OUR FORECAST: Once again, high pressure will dominate our weather today with
a good bit of sunshine and developing cumulus clouds. Temperatures will
rise to near 90, and the chance of any isolated shower or storm developing
in your area is very small. A developing trough across the area will
maintain a small chance of a shower or a storm overnight tonight. Skies
will be partially sunny on Sunday, with an enhanced chance of showers and
storms, thanks to the trough. We will maintain a small chance of an
overnight shower or storm Sunday night. Then typical summertime conditions
will prevail for much of next week, with scattered showers and storms each
day.

TROPICS: An Air Force Reconnaissance flight is scheduled to investigate the
disturbance east of the Bahamas this morning. The system may become more
organized later today and a tropical depression could form.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Lightning struck four rock climbers on Cathedral Peak
in Yosemite National Park. Fortunately, the victims all survived, but many
climbers are not so lucky. Climbers should carefully check weather
forecasts. It is generally safer to climb in the morning hours, because
most thunderstorms occur after noon.

MORE HURRICANE AUDREY: I have a copy of selected advisories on Hurricane
Audrey that were issued by the U.S. Weather Bureau in June 1957. I am
amazed at how far we have come in our warning process in the past 50 years.
All weekend, I will share selected advisories with you in te Weather Talk
blog.
