BIG RAIN PRODUCERS: For the second day in a row, thunderstorms have
developed over various parts of Alabama and they are producing locally heavy
amounts of rain. Early this afternoon, Flash Flood Warnings were already
being posted for some SE Alabama counties. Actually, from Birmingham north,
the showers and storms have been less numerous so far today than yesterday,
but that will change with time.
A deep layer of very moist air remains and with afternoon heating the
inevitable occurs-more showers and thunderstorms.
There was significant flash flooding over North-Central Alabama yesterday
afternoon and evening, especially in places like Cullman, Walker, St. Clair
and Jefferson Counties. Probably the worst flooding was over the NE part of
Jefferson County, especially around Trussville and in Western St. Clair
County around Moody. Cullman County even had a bridge washed out.
After we get through with tonight's thunderstorms, the number will gradually
thin out. While we will have another good chance Saturday, they should be a
little less numerous than today. We think they will thin out even more
Monday.
WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and storms on Saturday, but
they will gradually decrease in number early in the week to about a 1 in 3
chance by Tuesday. If you have a coastal vacation planned next week, we
don't believe Hurricane Emily will be a factor.
HURRICANE EMILY: She was 395 miles SE of Kingston, Jamaica this afternoon.
That country is going to have a close call Saturday. Emily has weakened a
bit, but she will regain strength as she heads straight NW through the
Caribbean and finally crosses the extreme north tip of the Yucatan Peninsula
Sunday night. After that it's not quite as certain, but the favored landfall
is near the mouth of the Rio Grande River on the USA-Mexico border Tuesday
night.
CLEANING OFF MY DESK: USA extremes included 125 in Death Valley Thursday
and 36 this morning in Stanley, Idaho...in Phoenix, it should be 111
tomorrow and 113 Sunday. Salt Lake City was expecting 102 today and
Saturday.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly spent yesterday morning at
the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). When she strutted in yesterday afternoon, she
smelled so good. Her face looks so tiny with the hair cut back. She looks
like a tiny doll. But, she also doesn't look like a dog. She looks like a
9-pound rodent. Molly is solid black except for a white streak under her
neck and chest. Sometimes when we get ready to go to bed, we temporarily
lose her when she is curled up in my dark-colored recliner, she literally
becomes invisible across the room. She had a fretful afternoon. As soon as
we got home from the PBS, I cranked up the vacuum cleaner. She immediately
headed for one of her three storm safe places where she hides when it's
thundering and when the vacuum cleaner is running. No sooner had I finished
with the vacuum cleaner, window shaking thunder started. I got so busy I had
no chance to play with her. When I got ready to go to bed late last night,
she had pulled her little bed that stays on the floor (that was loaded with
toys) across the living area to where I would have to step over it coming
out of my office. It was a clear signal of her wishes. Life goes on.
