...More Showers and Storms Today...

GOOD MORNING! One week ago, residents along the Gulf Coast were preparing
for Hurricane Dennis. Earlier this week, I thought that we might be getting
ready for another one, but a ridge of subtropical high pressure will serve
as a protective shield for the northern Gulf Coast against Hurricane Emily
(more shortly.)

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Moisture levels remain high across Alabama on
this Saturday. That subtropical ridge is going to expand into the state as
we head through time, and the remnants of Dennis are going to have less and
less of an effect. This spells less in the way of showers and storms,
starting perhaps as early as tomorrow, but not for today. Showers and
storms will remain rather numerous across the area today. The storms could
produce very heavy rainfall amounts again and lead to flooding.

We should see partial sun today, with increasing amounts tomorrow and into
next week. With more sun and fewer showers, we will see warmer
temperatures. Readings will be near normal for summertime in Alabama, with
highs in the lower 90s. Lows will be a tad warmer than normal with all the
humidity, bottoming out in the lower to middle 70s.

EMILY: Residents of Jamaica have been preparing for the arrival of
dangerous Hurricane Emily. Fortunately for the island nation, the storm
weakened substantially on Friday. But the storm is still a formidable
Category Three hurricane this morning as it churns westward through the
Caribbean. It will pass near or just south of the island this afternoon.

Its eventual track carries it over the Yucatan Peninsula and back into the
southwestern Gulf on Sunday. Then it will threaten the coast of extreme
Southeast Texas or northeastern Mexico Tuesday night, even though some of
the models try to take it as far north as Corpus Christi.

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: Another tropical wave is less than one thousand
miles east of the Windward Islands. It has some potential for development.
Our F storm will be Franklin.
