...Severe Weather Possible Today...
Alabama will be under the gun from a strong Spring storm system today.
A warm front will be setting up across North Central Alabama this
morning. Low pressure will begin developing along the front and
intensifying as it moves eastward. Instability and wind shear values
will be sufficient for supercell storms to form this morning across
the areas near and south of the front. Then a cold front will enter
western sections of the state early this afternoon. A line of severe
thunderstorms will push eastward ahead of the front. These storms
will be severe also, with the threat of damaging winds and isolated
tornadoes. Rain will end from west to east tonight.
SUNDAY: Tomorrow will be a blustery day with a strong northerly wind.
Afternoon highs will struggle to reach to 60 degree mark. Skies
should clear late in the day, and the mercury will drop like a rock
Sunday night, reaching the middle 30s on average. A few normally
colder locations may approach freezing by Monday morning.
WEEK AHEAD: Temperatures rebound a bit on Monday, with highs back
into the upper 60s. Tuesday looks like a pleasant day, with readings
starting off near 40 and rising into the lower 70s. The storm track
takes on a southern bent in the week ahead, with low pressure
developing to the west of us and then diving toward the Gulf Coast.
We may see some showers late on Tuesday into Wednesday, but the best
rain chances may be over South Alabama.
DALLAS WAKE UP CALL: The City of Dallas may have dodged a bullet last
evening as a severe thunderstorm moved across the Metroplex. The
storm was extremely intense in Tarrant County, where Fort Worth is
located. It became very intense just north of downtown Fort Worth,
producing lots of large hail, including baseball sized hail at the NWS
Fort Worth. It produced a tornado in the Haltom City community. The
main part of the storm headed directly for downtown Dallas. The large
supercell storm cycled down in intensity as it passed over the city,
but began to ramp up again after it passed through Highland Park. No
significant damage was report in the Metroplex. Other reports of
funnel clouds and tornadoes were received from areas east of the
Metroplex.
ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Issac Cline of Galveston 1900 fame was the
chief weatherman at New Orleans as the Great Mississippi River Flood
of 1927 was raging across the Midwest and South. He was issuing
forecasts of river crests on the Big Muddy that were being ignored by
New Orleans newspapers, who didn't want to publicize the potential
economic calamity that their port city was facing. On this date,
Cline called the newspapermen into his office and charged them with
jeopardizing the city's safety.
ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Hailstones weighing up to 2.2 pounds killed 92
people in the Gopalganj area of Bangladesh. The hail was reportedly
the size of pumpkins. This is the world's worst modern hailstorm.
Thousands of livestock were killed.
