...Another Warm Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! As Snoopy used to type while sitting atop his
doghouse, "It was a dark and stormy night..." Last night was one of those
situations where we had very strong spin in the atmosphere. It was really
off the scale. Many tornado warnings were issued over southern Mississippi
into South Alabama, and there were scattered reports of wind damage. A
house was destroyed near Monticello, Mississippi around 7 p.m. Over North
Alabama, the instability was located above the surface, but even those
elevated updrafts were able to produce some strong gusty winds. The rough
weather was associated with an upper trough and cold front that pushed into
the state overnight, accompanied by a small low pressure system that zipped
along the front.

TODAY'S WEATHER: The rainfall ended quickly overnight ahead of the
front, and we should have a nice day. Any fog and low clouds behind the
front will burn off during the morning hours, allowing for a good bit of
sunshine today. Temperatures will edge into the lower 60s today.

WARMTH AHEAD: Tomorrow should be even nicer, with lots of sunshine
and a nice afternoon. Temperatures will rise into the lower 70s tomorrow.
Those same 70s will be common into midweek. Partly sunny skies should
prevail through Tuesday before thing begin to cloud up on Wednesday with an
increasing southerly flow and an approaching cold front. That cold front
will push a line of showers and thunderstorms into Alabama Wednesday night
into the early morning hours of Thursday. Things will turn sharply colder
behind this front.

RECORD BIN: Valdez, AK recorded a record high of 53 on Friday.
This is an all time January record there. The 53F at Kodiak, AK beat their
old record for the date by 9 degrees. Pensacola observed a record high
temperature of 78F yesterday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The combination of black ice, dense fog and excessive
speed for the poor conditions caused a fifty-nine car pileup on I-80 near
the Salt Lake City, UT airport. Fourteen people were taken to hospitals,
but fortunately no one was killed.
