THERMOMETER RIDING HIGH: By early this afternoon, the temperature had
already climbed above the 70-degree mark across much of the Alabama
landscape and even to the mid 70s in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. These
temperatures are over 20 degrees too warm for early January. We do see a
cool down ahead, but not a major one. In fact, this cool down will make a
difficult forecast for Thursday and Friday. A cold front in the nation's
midsection will slowly push toward the SE reaching Central Alabama Thursday
morning. There will be some showers in connection with that front and maybe
even a thunderstorm, but it looks like the heaviest amount of moisture will
pass to the north of Alabama. The big question mark is where will the front
stall. Our best guess is south of Montgomery and then heading right back
north as a warm front on Saturday. So, we can still look for showers also on
Saturday. The cooler air is going to be extremely shallow, so don't look for
any clearing. We don't think our temperatures will get below the middle 40s
even on Friday morning. Highs will stay in the upper 50s, which is still
above normal. See our day-by-day forecast.
On Sunday, the warmest temperature in Alabama was 79 in Jackson, 78 in
Montgomery and 76 in Livingston and Tuscaloosa.

THE REFRIGERATOR: It was 29 below zero in Hallock, Minnesota this morning
for the national low. It was 28 below in Wolf Point and 25 below in Havre
and Jordan. All three of those towns are in Montana. The coldest in Alaska
was only 15 below at Northway.

2004 RAINFALL WRAP UP: Mobile had an extremely wet year with 76.16 inches
of rain. Up in the NW corner of Alabama, it was almost as wet with 71.50
inches at Muscle Shoals. Montgomery had only 52.10 and Huntsville 59.35.
Birmingham had 61.25-about 7 inches wetter than normal and it was the second
year in a row that we received more than 60 inches.

ROAMING: More heavy rain in the west in the coastal areas and more very
heavy snow in the mountains. Los Angeles received an additional 1.58 inches
in the last 24 hours...in Northern Utah, Alta in the Wasatch Mountains
reports 86 inches of snow on the ground. (ski area)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I suppose this is an omen of what the new year
will bring, because the very first thing I did after the new year rang in at
midnight was to go for a walk with little Miss Molly. Because of fireworks
going off in a nearby neighborhood, she stayed hid much of the evening. She
doesn't like sudden noises. We tried to hold her and comfort her, but she
wouldn't let us. She would slither away into one of her three hiding places
in the house and hunker down. At 12:22 a.m., after the midnight fireworks
had quieted down, she rang that little bell on the back door with such vigor
and so often that I thought it was the ice cream coming down the street at
midnight, no less. She needed to go that bad but was afraid to earlier. So
we took a nice walk to welcome the new year. Life goes on and I have an idea
that I will walk over 300 miles with her again this year. I will cherish
every single mile.
