APRIL IN JANUARY CONTINUES: The old backyard RC Cola thermometer is
confused. It thinks it's April. In fact, temperatures this afternoon are
more like mid-April than early January. That will come to an end soon, but
not in a dramatic way. Instead, cooler air will ease into this area Thursday
and bring our high temperatures down to the mid and upper 50s, which will
still be several degrees above normal. The front will have to wedge its way
into this area, because winds aloft will not permit a slam-bang entry. So,
the cooler air will be very shallow and you probably won't see any clearing
skies. It looks like the heaviest rain will occur north of Alabama, so we do
not expect any big amounts with this change to cooler. Over a period of
three days, Thursday through Saturday, we may not get more than two-thirds
of an inch. High temperatures have been establishing some records lately.
That doesn't impress me much, because those are individual daily records.
More impressive would be to break the record high for the whole month of 81
in 1949.

THE DREADED "I" WORD: Ice Storm. It strikes fear in almost anyone.
It's not for our area. Instead, major icing is likely to occur tonight and
tomorrow across Eastern Kansas and NW Missouri, including the Kansas City
Metro area. In some places, the ice load will build up to one inch followed
by several inches of snow. In a word, that spells "paralysis." We hate to
see that happen because it can bring suffering for a long time as trees and
power lines come crashing to the ground.

ELSEWHERE: A major winter system is affecting a wide area. Chicago
is expected to get 8 inches of snow. In Des Moines, freezing drizzle will be
followed by 10 inches of snow. Out west, the snow is much heavier. By midday
today, 10 to 17 inches of snow covered the Flagstaff area of Northern
Arizona and they are expecting 15 to 30 inches total. More heavy rain in the
lowlands of Southern California and Arizona. It sounds odd, but one of the
driest places in the world, Death Valley, received nearly an inch of rain in
the last 24 hours. Las Vegas has received 3 inches of rain during the last
week, which is two-thirds of their normal for the entire year...USA
temperature extremes in the last 24 hours: 88 in Laredo to 26 below at
Hallock, Minn.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor little Miss Molly. It's my fault.
I've got her so mixed up with her sleeping arrangements, that I feel sorry
for her. I'm trying to get back into a normal routine of going to bed at
10:30 and getting up at 5:00. However, I find myself going to bed after
midnight most nights. Little Miss Molly slept until after 9:00 this morning,
so we missed our most enjoyable early morning walk. When she did get up, she
whapped that little doorbell loudly and rapidly...last night she was also
pounding that little bell and I missed the only touchdown that Auburn
scored...on a recent walk, Molly got to rub noses with a good friend,
Mattie, who is also a Shih-tzu. Minutes later, Jo-Jo came bounding across
the walking track. He is a very pretty dog that got run over by a car about
a month ago and disappeared for several days. He came back home, crippled,
but walking normally now. Molly loves him. Life goes on.
