...Dangerous Cold...

Two main story lines right now in Alabama weather. Number one: the dangerous cold that will last for at least another week. Number two: the threat of snow Thursday. Let's work through the forecast.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: An upper level disturbance is swinging out of Arkansas this morning. It stirred up a good bit of clouds and even some snow showers last night as it swung southeastward through Kansas and Missouri overnight. Temperatures overnight reached the teens in many locations. You will notice some clouds today, even though the system is weakening. We can't rule out a few snow flurries as well, although chances are small. Readings will struggle to get to 35F today.

DANGEROUS COLD: Skies will clear tonight and cold air will continue to flow into the state. This will set the stage for a hard freeze, as temperatures will be 4-5 degrees colder than last night. Readings by morning should be in the teens over most of the area. Temperatures on Monday will struggle to rise above freezing north of I-20. Monday night may be the coldest night so far in this cold spell, with lows averaging 13F across the area. Tuesday afternoon readings will also struggle to get above freezing. Wednesday should be our best chance to see 40F in the next seven day as a new storm system approaches Alabama.

SNOW THURSDAY? A strong upper level disturbance swinging through the Plains and into the Ohio Valley will tap some Gulf moisture and spin up a low along the coast. This will spread snow into the state Thursday. Indications are that this system may have a chance to produce a general 2-4 inch snow for the state. We will be able to tell more about this system as we go through time.

FRIGID WEEKEND: Friday will feature clearing and windy conditions with temperatures struggling to reach freezing. Frigid air will spread into Alabama behind this system, and if there is a snow cover, we will see some frigid temperatures for the weekend, perhaps pushing 0F in some areas.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION FLYOVER: If you haven't seen the International Space Station fly over, you may get a chance tonight. Look to the south southwest just after 6 p.m. The Space Station will appear very bright as it streaks to the northeast. It will be at its highest about 6:04, about 30 degrees above the horizon to the southeast.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's hard to imagine that we are about to enter our fifth of producing the netcast that's all about weather. We have an exciting lineup of guests in store for 2010. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008: Snow flurries were reported across the Florida Peninsula after an Arctic airmass moved into the area behind a strong cold front. Snow flurries were reported from Port Orange north to Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach. A hard freeze was reported all across northern and Central Florida.
