...Some Snow Likely On Thursday...

BRING IN THE BRASS MONKEY: In terms of severity and longevity, this looks like it will be our most intense cold wave since 1985. As of late last night, some of the colder pockets across North Alabama had been below freezing for over 72 hours. The good news is that we expect a good supply of sunshine today and tomorrow, and afternoon temperatures won't be quite as cold. We are forecasting a high in the mid 30s today, followed by upper 30s tomorrow. While these figures are certainly better than our high of 28 yesterday, they are still 15 to 20 degrees below the average high of 53 for early January. And, tonight will bring another hard freeze with a low in the mid teens for most communities early tomorrow.

WHAT ABOUT SNOW: A rather vigorous wave aloft will pass over Alabama Thursday, and will bring a chance of snow to our state and much of the Deep South. For now it looks like moisture will be rather limited, and we are projecting only around one inch of snow for most communities. But, keep in mind the ground and highway infrastructure is very cold, and even one inch of snow will lead to some icy travel that will become problematic by Thursday night and Friday morning. The best chance of snow will come from about 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday. And, there could very well be a narrow band of heavier snow, but defining that right now is difficult. It could very well be somewhere over South Alabama where the moisture will be deeper. But again, for the northern half of the state for now we are forecasting a general one inch snow with potential for a little more in spots.

ANOTHER ARCTIC BLAST: Even colder air invades Alabama following the snow. Friday and Saturday will be coldest days, with highs only in the 18 to 23 degree range with wind chill values near zero at times. We are projecting an average low of 9 degrees above zero Saturday morning, but if we have snow cover and light wind, the low could be closer to 5. And, the colder pockets over North Alabama could very well approach zero. For Sunday morning, we are forecasting a low of 10 degrees. The air will be very dry and the sky should be mostly clear over the weekend.

REMEMBER: We always hear about tragic house fires during periods of extremely cold weather like this. Remember, use common sense if you have a space heater and don't put them close to anything that might catch on fire. And, if you know any elderly person that might not have an adequate source of heat, please go out of your way to check on them. It is rarely this cold in Alabama.

ICE BOX TIDBITS: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was Orr, Minnesota with 40 degrees below zero. The cold air extends down into Florida, where hundreds of people lined up at shelters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties the past few nights.Yesterday's low at Miami Beach was 44; they will drop into the low to mid 30s this weekend.
