...Still In A Deep Freeze...
HAS CANADA MOVED SOUTH: Today was not a good day for golf, jogging or swimming. This one fact will explain why. At midday, it was only 20 at Birmingham with a brisk wind chill of 7. Up on Mt. Cheaha it was only 17 with a wind chill of 2. Even the weather map looks unfriendly today. At the surface, a very strong high-pressure ridge stretched from Texas to Southern Manitoba. On the east side of that ridge, very cold air from the Great Northland continued to be transported down into the Southeast USA. This morning snow flurries were widespread across North and Central Alabama. Some continued this afternoon.
During the night major travel problems developed when water on the roads quickly froze and became a skating rink. Even at midday numerous accidents were reported in Randolph County on Highway 48 between Wedowee and the Georgia line and between Wedowee and Lineville. Two of those involved 18-wheelers that completely blocked the road. Numerous roads were still closed late this morning in Cleburne County. In Clay County, most county roads were still closed. Those East/Central Alabama reports were also typical of extreme NE Alabama.
WHEN WILL IT GET WARMER: Not right away and the pesky old wind chill index adds to the discomfort. The wind chill will be zero at times tonight and most of tomorrow. It gets a little warmer by Monday afternoon and a little more on Tuesday. Highs on those two days will be in the 40s. We believe the temperature will stay below freezing all day Saturday with a brisk NW wind. We are calling for mid 30s Sunday afternoon, but there should be a hard freeze again tonight and Saturday night.
AT THE BEACH: I know you are probably not going, but some very unusual cold weather is affecting the Alabama coast. Another hard freeze is expected to night with lows between 16 and 20. The wind chill may drop as low as zero to minus 10 after midnight. The low Sunday morning should be 22 and with a high of 46.
THE OVERNIGHT DEEP FREEZE: Check out these low temperatures:
8 Hytop
11 Hamilton, Moulton
12 Decatur, Cullman, Jasper, Grantley, Muscadine
13 Huntsville, Russellville, Pinson, Scrougeout
15 Roebuck, Ashville, Hazel Green
16 Birmingham, Alexander City, Camp Hill
ROAMING: 33 below zero at Minot, North Dakota...29 below Atqasuk, Alaska...80 yesterday Burbank and San Diego...8 below this morning on Mt. LeConte with 18 inches of snow...109 is the high for Saturday and Sunday at Meekatharra, Australia where they are enjoying summer.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Seems like there is always something to upset my little 8-pound pal known as Molly. In the midst of the Alabama/Texas game last night, the battery got low in the control panel of our security system and it emitted a short beep every few seconds and then it would stop. Little Miss Molly immediately went to one of her safe places that she uses during fireworks and thunderstorms. We can be walking on the track and, if she hears a bumping noise from an industrial site all the way across US-11, she immediately does a 180 and heads home. Life goes on.
