GREAT RECOVERY WEATHER: We could not have ordered more desirable weather as
Alabama continues to dig out from the long-lasting effects of Hurricane
Ivan. Not only do we have mostly dry weather, but temperatures are more
bearable for those multiplied thousands of homes still without electricity.
For most of the state, the dry weather should last into the weekend with
cool nights and fairly comfortable afternoons. The exception is a few
thunderstorms possible Wednesday and Thursday along the Alabama coast.

Incredibly, part of that moisture will come from the returning remnants of
Ivan, which ran into a big high pressure area and was bulged back southward
and was moving westward across Central Florida today.
We need to celebrate something, so let's cheer these pleasant low
temperatures this morning:

46 in Meridianville (north of Huntsville)
48 in Owens Crosswords
49 in Valley Head, DeSoto State Park, Russell Cave
50 in Pinson, Scottsboro, Ashland, Wedowee
52 in Ft. Payne and Cullman
54 in Anniston, Alex City, Fayette, Clanton
55 in Gadsden, Jasper, Auburn, Brewton

LAST THURSDAY: It was a horrible day and certainly not a time to be
lighthearted, but I did report to some folks that at least we didn't have to
worry about an ozone alert. At Birmingham Airport, the rainfall tally for
last Thursday amounted to 9.75 inches. Until that time, the most we had ever
had in 24 hours was 8.84 inches on July 6-7, 1916. That too, was from a
hurricane that had pushed into North Mississippi and stalled with the
remnants drifting east across the Birmingham area and causing widespread
major flooding in Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The active season continues. Three named storms in
progress today. Tropical Storm Jeanne was several hundred miles NE of the
Bahamas. She is expected to curve almost completely around and head back
south. Karl is already a powerful hurricane with sustained winds of 120. He
is expected to move almost due north through the heart of the Atlantic and
should be passing east of Nova Scotia Friday night and Saturday. Our newest
storm is Lisa with winds up to 60. She was moving westward way out in the
Atlantic. We will watch her.

STRONG HINTS OF A CHANGING SEASON: 29 this morning at Saranac Lake, New
York was the coldest in the lower 48 states. Up in Northern Canada, it was
hanging out around 1 below zero at Alert, the northernmost weather station
in North America. In Northern Utah, heavy snow warnings for the higher
elevations of the Wasatch Mountains, including the Alta area with 3 to 6
inches today and possibly 3 to 7 more inches tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just like old times on our early morning walk.
The Old Crow Creek was running again because of 8.79 inches of rain
Thursday. Little Miss Molly wanted to go wading, but I said no. A cool
post-hurricane breeze made it so pleasant...even the Old Crow Air Force flew
over-18 crows in one group! Two others landed later in the Old Crow Motel.
We had not seen any crows for a long, long time. Also we were greeted by a
cardinal and mockingbird. Another unseen bird in the underbrush was singing
like crazy-sounded like he was playing taps...great medicine for our
hurricane hangover and sleep shortages. Life goes on after every storm.
