...Blue Sky and Sunshine...
While we have lots to discuss today, the good news is that we expect
beautiful weather across Alabama for the next three to five days.
Temperatures will remain quite comfortable with only a slow warming trend.
TRIO IN THE TROPICS: Karl is a major hurricane in the eastern Atlantic, but
the storm should move northward and is no threat to land. Hurricane Jeanne
is east of the Bahamas in the Atlantic, and is expected to meander around in
basically the same place for the next five days and is no immediate threat
to land. Our third system, Lisa, is a tropical storm and is headed in a
westerly direction. There is a chance Lisa could turn northward before
affecting the Lesser Antilles, but computer models are all over the place
making for a low confidence forecast. And, in the far eastern Atlantic,
another disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands has the chance to grow into
tropical storm Matthew over the next few days.
IVAN WON'T GO AWAY: Oddly enough, what is left of former hurricane Ivan is
moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico this morning. The mid level system
will keep moving westward, and could bring some generous rainfall amounts to
the Texas and Louisiana coasts late in the week. The upper air wind pattern
could actually favor Ivan regaining some tropical characteristics over the
next few days in the southern Gulf. This is almost like watching the
Twilight Zone.
FINAL IVAN NOTES: The official 24 hour rain total at the Birmingham Airport
from Ivan last week was 9.75", a new 24 hour rainfall record for the city.
And, the pressure dropped to 29.14" at 5:42 p.m. on Thursday, which is
apparently the lowest pressure on record for Birmingham based on preliminary
data from the NWS.
