=========================================

THE BOOM-BOOM OF THUNDER: Not everybody getting rain again this
afternoon, but for the last several days the thunderstorms that have
formed across the state were unusually noisy like numerous drums in a
high school or college band. This means the storms are overloaded with
lightning. That alone makes them extremely dangerous and for the 8th
zillionth time we highly recommend that you scurry inside when you
first hear thunder.

Several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were posted across the state
this afternoon. Most of the storms that did form produced locally
heavy amounts of rain. Last night there was some wind damage across NW
Alabama from thunderstorms in places like Fayette, Millport and near
Haleyville. We may hear some more isolated damage reports this
afternoon. Some folks got over 2 inches of rain last night and a storm
yesterday afternoon dumped 2.40 inches at Mount Olive in North
Jefferson County.

ENOUGH OF THIS HOT WEATHER: We are all fed up with it, but we cannot
say goodbye at least through Friday. There are increasing indications,
however, that the old thermometer will become more rational beginning
Saturday and through the weekend and early next week. This is due to a
weak frontal boundary that is expected to drift down into North
Alabama and stall. An upper level trough will carve out over the east
and the heat ridge will retreat to the west. What does all this mean?
It means our high temperatures will back off to the upper 80s or near
90 starting Saturday and through at least next Tuesday.

Thunderstorms again Thursday and most of Friday should be widely
separated, but there will be an increase in thunderstorm activity
starting Saturday and extending into early next week. I can hear
people all over the state cheering.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Beryl was a little stronger this
afternoon, but the Tropical Storm Watch for the eastern coast of North
Carolina has been discontinued. This was because he was centered over
100 miles ENE of Cape Hatteras moving north at 9 with sustained winds
of 45 mph. The latest official NHC track forecast keeps him well
offshore as he moves NE.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: After a brief break, it was heating up again
in South Dakota with 107 in Phillip and 106 in Rapid City...a few
other highs included 105 in Shreveport, 106 in Waco and 108 in
Wichita...the hottest was 118 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had just gotten Little Miss Molly
calmed down from holiday firecrackers and the last thunderstorm, but
the booming thunder this afternoon sent her scurrying under the bed.
Later this afternoon I hope to pet and cuddle her and divert her
attention by playing lots of ballgames. Thanks to Kim Langston for an
update on Scooby, the Great Dane, who overheated last weekend. He is
doing much better, but will have another liver test in about 2 weeks.
Life goes on.
