...Way Too Cold...

A STATEWIDE FREEZE: It happened again like it has a number of times
this winter. It was below freezing in Alabama this morning all the way
to the Gulf beaches. So cold, in fact, that the temperature dropped to
23 at Coden. That is as far south in Mobile County as you can go
without jumping into the Gulf of Mexico. It was 20 at Mobile Regional
Airport. We have a long list of low temperatures on the Blog, but here
are some samples:

9 in Hamilton and Camp Hill
11 Scrougout
12 Concord/Hueytown, Muscadine, Haleyville, Gadsden
13 Vernon, Munford, Muscle Shoals, Pinson
14 Cullman Airport, Jasper, Centreville, Sylacauga
16 Birmingham, Anniston, Huntsville
17 Tuscaloosa, Alexander City, Childersburg

OUR LAST 10 DAYS: These stats tell the story and it may reveal why
your heating bill will probably be larger this month. In the third
week of January, the average high for Birmingham is 53 and the average
low 32. In the last 10 days, our average low has been 24 and the
average high only 46. Nine out of the last 10 mornings have been below
freezing, including a low of 12 on the 16th.

FREEZING IN FLORIDA: A Freeze Warning is posted for tonight over
almost all of Florida, even down into the Miami area. This will be a
damaging freeze in the north and central portions. In fact, a Hard
Freeze Warning is posted for the Orlando area where they are expecting
mid 20s tonight. It will drop to around 18 in Tallahassee and about 32
in Miami. This morning it was 30 in Orlando and Daytona, 28 in Ft.
Pierce and 24 in Gainesville and Jacksonville.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS: In Great Smoky Mountain National Park and in
the North Carolina mountains, it is winter. On Mt. LeConte it was 8
below zero this morning with 9 inches of snow on the ground. It was 2
below on Newfound Gap with 4 inches. Gatlinburg has 3 inches of snow
on the ground with a low of 8 and Cades Cove should look like a
postcard this morning with 4 inches of snow and a low of 4. Mt.
Mitchell, North Carolina has 5 inches of snow and 2 below zero and
Beech Mountain 7 inches of snow.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Cold air is beginning to build again in Alaska and NW
Canada. 33 below zero this morning at Barrow. In the lower 48, the
coldest is 26 below at Wartertown, New York.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I know my Little Miss Molly like a book.
She knows me, too, and knows exactly how to manipulate me. As
predicted, she has taken naps most of today after a day at the beauty
shop. She sure did smell good when she got home. It is amazing why she
trembles so much en route to the PBS and is calm and collected on the
way home. She can get within a few blocks of our house and recognize
the scenery and her tail goes wagging like a buzz saw. She knows every
house on our street and which ones have a doggy friend and people that
love her. I can no longer call her my 9-pound pal. She now weighs 10
pounds. Life goes on.
