...Warm September Afternoons...
CHANCE OF A SHOWER OR STORM DAILY: Scattered thunderstorms developed
early this afternoon, mainly over extreme North Alabama and they were
moving toward the SE. Some of those were dumping locally heavy rain
and lots of lightning. A separate isolated thunderstorm developed
right over downtown Birmingham and it, too, was moving toward the SE.
This type weather may be the norm for the next several days as high
temperatures climb into the upper 80s almost every day. A few spots,
especially in West and South Alabama, may touch the 90-degree mark. It
was 90 yesterday afternoon in Muscle Shoals.
Highs in the upper 80s are close to the average for early September,
so this warmth is not that unusual. We believe nights will still show
us some comfortable temperatures and lows across Central Alabama
average between 64 and 67. Low and mid 60s were fairly common across
North and Central Alabama last night.
As a general rule, the afternoon showers and thunderstorms should be
widely spaced at least through Friday and occurring almost entirely in
the afternoon and early evening. That means that most communities will
stay dry. There may be a slight increase in showers and storms on
Saturday and even more so on Sunday. However, we will cross that
bridge when we get closer.
AT THE BEACH: High temperatures will be in the 86 to 89-degree range
for the next several days. There will be a few thunderstorms each
afternoon except becoming more numerous on Saturday.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A persistent low-pressure area was still hanging
out this afternoon on the North Carolina coast, mainly east of the
Outer Banks. It was producing showers and thunderstorms. Upper level
winds are expected to remain unfavourable for tropical development as
it moves slowly NNE. In connection with that low, Norfolk was drenched
with 4.44 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Way out in the Eastern
Atlantic, Tropical Storm Fred had sustained winds of around 65 mph and
was located 345 miles SW of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. He
was moving west at 14 and should slowly curve around to the NW and
then north over the next 5 days over the open Atlantic. He is expected
to intensify into a hurricane.
HARD FREEZE: Difficult to believe but the temperature dropped to 19
at Stanley, Idaho nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains this morning. That
qualifies as a hard freeze. In some parts of NW Montana, the ground is
frozen to a depth of 4 inches. Does that mean the Pacific Northwest is
going to have a very cold winter? It absolutely does not mean anything
this early. It is like a football game in the first few minutes of
play. You still do not know who will win the game.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I get so busy that I pause for
a few minutes and take a break. I go find Little Miss Molly, pick her
up and cuddle with her and talk to her like she is a miniature human.
She almost seems that way. She will look me right in the eye while I
am talking to her as if she understands every word and she can give me
a soft loving look. That melts me, of course, but life goes on.
