...Happy Labor Day!...

It has turned out to be a beautiful Labor Day across Alabama with lots
of sunshine, warm temperatures and the typical humid feel that one
would expect here. Satellite pictures show generally fair skies in
the I-20/59 corridor, with cumulus clouds developing over the
Tennessee Valley and a bit more clouds to the south from Demopolis to
Montgomery to Auburn. A few showers were over Southeast Alabama.
Widely scattered showers and storms could develop, this afternoon,
mainly to the south of Birmingham. Temperatures are warming quickly
into the 80s.

THIS WEEK: A warm, humid airmass will cover Alabama for the days
ahead through Friday, giving us only isolated to widely scattered
showers and storms each day. Rain chances will be about 20% each
day. Highs will be in the middle 80s. Lows will be in the middle
60s. Should be perfect weather for the Barons as they start the
Southern League Playoffs Friday.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: Moisture levels will be on the increase, and an
approaching upper trough will increase our rain chances as we head
toward the weekend. Scattered showers and storms will develop on
Saturday, and be more likely on Sunday. The football games could see
a passing shower on Saturday, but we don't expect a washout.

TROPICS: The tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands is one of the
most impressive to move off the African Coast this season. It does
have a circulation and thunderstorm activity, but is not quite
organized enough on satellite for the NHC to classify it at a tropical
depression just yet. It's not far away however, and look for that to
happen later today. It will go on to become Tropical Storm Fred
fairly quickly. Not to be confused with 1979's Frederic, which
devastated the Alabama coast that year on September 12th. Frederic's
name was retired after his category three rampage. This is the F
Storm from the same list however. It should stay east of the islands
and U.S.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: WB 190 featured Jim Stefkovich and John
Gordon from the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and
Louisville. It was a great show. Download and listen by late tonight

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: The Met Life Blimp (Snoopy and Woodstock), in
town for the Chiefs/Raiders NFL game, broke loose from its moorings at
the Downtown Airport in Kansas City, MO as a strong squall line passed
through the city. The unmanned aircraft could not be tracked on
radar during the storm, which led the FAA to ground or divert all air
traffic in the Kansas City area. The runaway blimp was tracked by
controlled as it floated east for about two hours before landing on a
farm fuel truck in Chillicothe MO, about 60 miles away. The blimp is
equipped with a safety mechanism that releases the craft's helium when
the blimp is unmanned. Wonder who was insuring the farmer's fuel truck?
