...Wet Week Ahead...

Lots of folks are heading to stadiums across Alabama and the Southeast
today to watch some football. Usually this time of year, we are
cautioning folks to take the sunglasses and sunscreen, wear light
colored clothing, etc. Not today. Clouds and light rain will be the
norm on this second Saturday of the college football season across
Central Alabama.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: Surface observations show a low
pressure system off the Louisiana coast southeast of Lake Charles.
This low will strengthen a bit before it moves ashore into southern
Louisiana. A warm and moist airmass is already in place across the
Deep South, with a northward moving warm front over southern sections
of the area. To the north, strong high pressure is over the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan. Easterly flow around the anticyclone is
drawing some drier air into the northern half of the state. This
complex situation leads to a complex forecast.

FOR TODAY/TONIGHT: Skies will be mostly cloudy with patches of light
rain forming during the day. A large mass of rain ahead of the warm
front will spread northward, reaching Clanton and Auburn by late
afternoon, Tuscaloosa shortly after dark and Birmingham by mid-
evening. Temperatures will warm into the lower 80s this afternoon
with humid upper 60s overnight

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Expect periods of light rain for the UAB game at
Legion Field this afternoon. Tailgaters at the Capstone can expect
a good chance of light rain during the afternoon with rain chances
increasing during the game. Some light rain in Auburn during the
early afternoon, with a better chance of rain beginning about an hour
before kickoff. It won't be heavy rain, but it will be annoying for
'Bama and Auburn fans. Take the rain gear with you for sure.

SUNDAY: Expect rain chances to be high on Sunday as the surface low
meanders up into the Southeast, triggering periods of showers and
storms.

NEXT WEEK: The low remains with us for much of the week ahead,
setting the stage for healthy doses of rain and storms each day.
Rainfall amounts could become quite heavy over the next 7 days,
averaging some 3-5 inches with heavier amounts in some spots.

TROPICS: The remnants of Erika were bringing heavy rains to Puerto
Rico this morning. Conditions unfavorable for redevelop west of the
Cape Verde Islands, the other about 1,400 miles east of the Leewards.
Neither very promising right now.

WEATHERBRAINS: Talking tropics this week with the head of Crown
Weather, Rob Lightbown. The show will be available by late Monday
night at www.WeatherBrains.com or on iTunes. Follow our tweets for
WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THE DATE IN 1944: The destroyer USS Warrington was sunk by the
Great Atlantic Hurricane some 300 miles east of Cape Canaveral FL.
247 men were lost in the tragedy. Follow my weather history tweets on
Twitter.com @ wxhistorian.
