...A Stormy Saturday...

It has been another Friday night of tracking severe
weather across the Deep South. Tornadoes on Friday struck Central
Arkansas hard, causing at least seven fatalities. During the
afternoon, they intensified over northern Mississippi, producing
reports of funnel clouds and tornadoes from Oxford over to Northeast
Mississippi. Meanwhile, as night fell, the airmass over northern
Louisiana into western Mississippi became very dynamic, and severe
thunderstorm erupted. Tornado reports began to come in across the
Mississippi River Delta. It turned into a very long night.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Thunderstorms moved into West Alabama
after midnight and proceeded eastward, diminishing in intensity as it
went. Some of the storms were on the strong side, but were far weaker
generally than their predecessors to the west of Alabama from
earlier. Rain and storms will continue through the noon hour, but the
precipitation should continue to fall apart.

BUT: We note that the main cold front is still moving
through Mississippi this morning. In areas where the sun breaks out
later this morning, strong storms could redevelop this afternoon
as the front moves into Alabama. The best chance for this will be
over eastern sections of the state. Some of those storms could be
strong to severe, but they will quickly move into Georgia by evening.

DRIER AIR: Drier air will move into the area tonight
behind the front. Western sections will see sunshine by early
afternoon, and the clearing will spread eastward. Overnight, clear
skies and light winds will be the rule, and the mercury will fall into
the upper 40s and lower 50s across the area.

SUPER SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a splendid day. There
could be a little low cloudiness and fog early, but sunshine should
rule the day, with very pleasant temperatures in the lower and middle
70s. Looks for another refereshing night Sunday night, with lows in
the middle and upper 40s by Monday morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like a gorgeous day with
lots of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. QA weak front will try
to drop into the area on Tuesday, perhaps bringing a chance of showers
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Thursday looks partly cloudy and warm.
An interesting little low pressure system will swing across the
Tennessee Valley Thursday night into Friday, bringing another chance
of showers and storms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Today is the ninth anniversary of
one of the worst tornadoes to ever hit the United States. The
Oklahoma City tornado David Andra, the Science and Operations Officer
at the NWS in Norman, Oklahoma watched in horror as one of the most
violent tornadoes observed charged toward the Oklahoma City Metro
area. Forecasters in the office asked if they were doing all they
could do to get the message out to the public. Andra responded by
writing the first ever Tornado Emergency Message. The enhanced
wording is used in especially threatening situations when a large and
damaging tornado is occurring.
