...A Stormy Saturday Ahead...

STORMY TIMES AHEAD: A major storm system to the west of Alabama will
bring a significant risk of severe weather today to the general area
from Monroe, Louisiana to St. Louis, MO, where the Storm Prediction
Center has defined a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms. A slight
risk surrounds that area, and extends from South Louisiana to near
Milwaukee and Detroit. Here in Alabama, today will be warm and windy
with a mix of sun and clouds, and only a small risk of an afternoon
shower.

The big band of showers and storms to the west should move into
Northwest Alabama late tonight, possibly after midnight. These storms
could be severe, but they should slowly weaken during the pre-dawn
hours tomorrow as the air becomes more stable. But, we expect storms
to re-intensify during the day tomorrow, and the forecast instability
values and wind profiles suggest that some storms could be strong to
severe. SPC has much of Alabama in a slight risk of severe weather
tomorrow, and some storms could produce hail and high winds. An
isolated tornado is certainly not out of the question with a fair
amount of helicity.

The greatest risk of severe storms will be in the 11:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. time frame. But, a shower or storm is possible at almost any hour
of the day, so if you have an outdoor event planned be
prepared for some rain, possibly heavy at times. We are projecting
average rain totals of one inch, but isolated spots could approach two
inches where stronger storms develop.

DRIER AIR SUNDAY: The sky will clear tomorrow night, and Sunday will
be a dry day with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the low to
mid 70s along with lower humidity levels. The dry air will stay in
place during the first half of next week.

BIG STORMS YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT: A 100 yard wide multi-vortex
tornado was reported last night in Osage County, Oklahoma near the
community of Ralston. Tornadoes were also reported near Rock Valley,
Iowa and Blackburn, Arkansas. Golf ball sized hail was reported on the
campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, and hail stones 3
inches in diameter were reported near Midwest City, Oklahoma.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Record warmth in Juneau AK with a high of 72
degrees, while record cold affected the Hawaiian Islands with a record
low of 60 degrees at Honolulu.

AROUND THE NATION: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Laredo,
Texas with 107 degrees. Stanley, Idaho dropped to 7 degrees early
yesterday morning. Heavy snow was the story for parts of the Rocky
Mountain states yesterday; the wintry weather was blamed for a rash of
minor accidents that closed westbound Interstate 70 for about 90
minutes just west of Denver. Up to 40 cars were involved in minor
accidents on U.S. 36 near Lyons, 30 miles northwest of Denver.
