I couldn't imagine a much more beautiful morning than the one that we
experienced today here in Central Alabama. Gorgeous blue skies, cool
temperatures and light winds made it difficult to tell if it were
October or April. And both can be superb here in our state. Lows
across Central Alabama at Anniston, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa were 42,
43 and 44 respectively. Pinson dropped to 40. Across the Tennessee
Valley, lows included 36 at Fort Payne and Meridianvile, 37 at Muscle
Shoals, 38 at Crossville and Decatur and 39F at the Cullman Airport.
Skywatcher John Talbot reports 39 in Hueytown.

NATIONALLY: Looking at a composite of radars across the U.S. this
afternoon, we find showers across the Northern Plains, with some snow
in southern Montana. There could be a storm or two this afternoon
from Nebraska to Iowa, but stable air covers much of the country.
Light rain continues over the northern Great Lakes states and showers
are retreating eastward away from the Northeast with the coastal low
that developed yesterday off the Carolinas. The closest precipitation
to Alabama is well offshore of the coast of Delaware.

OUR FORECAST: Our beautiful weather will continue for the next few
days, likely through Wednesday as high pressure remains in control of
our weather. That high is over New England this afternoon, with a
huge ridge extending into the Deep South. This is keeping a dry
easterly flow going across Alabama. Tomorrow, the center of the high
will shift to the Southeast, turning our winds to the south. Moisture
levels will go up a bit. Meanwhile, a large storm system will take
shape over the Rockies Tuesday night and shift onto the Plains
Wednesday. Thursday will be a transition day for us, with increasing
clouds and a good chance of showers and storms during the overnight.
The system should be a slow mover and with a good influx of Gulf
moisture, we could see some nice rains continuing into a large part of
Friday. That would be lovely. The weekend looks fine, as rain should
end before Friday evening, leaving fair and seasonable weather for
Saturday and Sunday.

TROPICS: All quiet for now. A weak low pressure system is over the
northwestern Caribbean. This is where we will look for the potential
of tropical development over the next few days. We could see a
tropical low form and move into the southern Gulf during and move
toward southern Florida.

A QUICK NOTE ON BASEBALL: I fear that the clock may have struck
midnight with two outs in the seventh inning Thursday night on the
Cinderella story that has been the Tampa Bay Rays this season. The
ghosts of Fenway were awakened by Coco Crisp's last ditch fouling off
of pitch after pitch until a single resulted. This precipitated the
greatest post season comeback since 1929. Tonight will feature a
loser leave town elimination match in the Trop in Tampa. It will be
exciting. I have to brag that I chose the Rays to win the World
Series during Spring Training this year. It seemed foolish at the
time, as the odds against such a preposterous outcome to the season
were reportedly 1000:1. So, I have to admit I am pulling for the Rays
tonight. Good luck to both teams.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Early season snows fell in the mountains of
West Virginia, where 1-2 feet of snow fell near Summersville and
Richwood. Many trees that were still in full foliage were felled by
the weight of the snow. The rain changed to a record early, heavy,
wet snow over the southern mountains of West Virginia. It was the
worst forest disaster since the fires of 1952-53.....
