...A Good Soaking Tomorrow...

RAIN ON THE WAY: A major storm system over the nation's bread basket
will bring some big weather changes to Alabama during the next 48
hours. Clouds will increase today, and a few showers could break out
this afternoon. But, the most widespread rain should come from about
6:00 this evening through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. This looks like a
beneficial rain for the state with around one inch expected for most
communities. This will also be a cool rain; a wedge type setup will
bring cooler air into Alabama from the east; looks like we will hover
in the cool 50s all day
tomorrow with a steady, soaking rain. Some thunder is not out of the
question, but with a cool and stable boundary layer strong storms
certainly won't be a problem.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: It is beginning to look like the rain could end
before the high school games begin tomorrow night, but we sure can't
promise that. One way or another, the fields will be very wet.
Temperatures for the games tomorrow night will be in the 50 to 55
degree range. In college football, Auburn is at West Virginia with a
6:30 p.m. kick off in Morgantown tonight on ESPN. Should be clear and
chilly with 54 at kick off and in the 40s by the second half. Two
games here in Birmingham with the Citadel at Samford for homecoming
and also the Magic City Classic at Legion Field with a 2:30 kick off
between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. It should be mostly clear for
both games with about 65 at kick off and 50s in the 4th quarter.
Alabama is in a crucial game in Knoxville at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on
ESPN. There may still be a slight chance of some rain in the vicinity
with 50s at kick off and about 46 by the end of the game.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The sky will clear Saturday morning as a dry slot
moves over the state; the high Saturday afternoon will be in the mid
60s. Sunday looks like a beautiful day with ample sunshine and a high
around 70.

COLD AIR BLAST NEXT WEEK: Computer models are now beginning to agree
that the coldest air so far this season will roll into Alabama early
next week. North winds will pick up Monday, and it is unlikely that we
reach the 60 degree mark. Then, we expect temperatures to fall down
into the 30s both Tuesday and Wednesday morning. At this point it
looks like Wednesday morning might be the coldest, with potential for
widespread frost, and a freeze for the colder valleys.

OCTOBER SNOW: Winter storm warnings remain in effect for parts of
Nebraska and Kansas this morning, where over six inches of snow is
expected with strong winds. That combination is expected to produce
power outages, and near "whiteout" conditions.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: Join us on ABC 33/40 tomorrow night at 7:00 for
"Southern Skies of 2008"… this is our annual fall severe weather
special. You will see some great Alabama weather stories, and learn
more about getting your family ready for our fall tornado season,
which begins in only 10 days!
