...Rain Mostly Over...
A SUNNY WEEKEND: Rain overnight and today brought some beneficial
amounts to parts of the state, but some areas did not get enough to
throw a party over. Now we are headed for a dry period that will last
well into next week.
Here is a sampling of the rain amounts across Alabama. The heavier
amounts, by far, were down south.
2.99 Fairhope
2.93 Loxley
2.94 Daphne
3.78 near Orange Beach
3.10 south of Opelika
0.96 Anniston Airport
0.26 Birmingham Airport
1.06 Montgomery
0.27 Tuscaloosa
By midafternoon, most of the rain had moved out of the state, but
there was some scattered light rain still over NE Alabama. Clouds will
gradually break up tonight, but as they do, with all the low-level
moisture, look for dense fog to develop in some areas especially where
there has been some good rain. The fog will break up tomorrow morning
leaving mostly sunshine. This afternoon, most of Mississippi was
already clear and the weak cool front had pushed into NW Alabama.
We are in for our lowest temperatures so far this season early next
week. A very large mass of colder air will start forcing its way south
from Alaska and Canada over the weekend. The front is expected to come
through Central Alabama late Sunday night or early Monday morning. It
will be a large high-pressure system covering many states. We think
our lowest temperature will be in the mid 30s Tuesday morning. This
may easily be a scattered frost situation for the colder valleys of
North and NE Alabama. Highs on Monday, even with sunshine, may not get
out of the upper 50s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most of the high school games tonight will be
played without rain. Some clouds may linger. The fields, of course,
will be mostly wet and temperatures will be in the 50s throughout the
game. Saturday the Citadel is in Birmingham for the Samford Homecoming
game with a 2:00 p.m. kick off. 30 minutes later at 2:30, the Magic
City Classic will kick off at Legion Field between Alabama State and
Alabama A&M. That game is on tape delay at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU. For
both games, it will be sunny with about 68 at kick off and 58 by the
final whistle. In Knoxville, Alabama will meet Tennessee for a 6:45
kick off on ESPN. Fair dry weather with a light wind and in the 50s at
kick off and 40s by the end of the game.
PRIME TIME SPECIAL: On ABC 33/40 tonight at 7:00 p.m., tune in for
Southern Skies 2008. This is the annual fall severe weather special.
You will see some great Alabama weather stories and learn more about
getting your family ready for our fall tornado season. Sometimes it is
more active than the spring season. The program lasts one hour and is
loaded with good information.
