...Thunderboomers!...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Good old August thunderstorms developed fairly
early across Alabama today, especially over the north part of the
state. At one point, NWS in Huntsville issued a Flash Flood Warning
for parts of Cullman, Florence and Morgan Counties. The thunderstorms
were dumping very heavy rain and moving toward the east. Undoubtedly
some communities received well over an inch of rain in just a short
time late this morning and early this afternoon. The NWS/Storm
Prediction Center mentions a Slight Risk of a severe thunderstorm this
afternoon and evening for the north half of Alabama.

WHY ALL THE ACTION? Another one of those frontal boundaries that we
have been dealing with all summer. They do not produce enough cooling
to be known as a cold front or even a cool front, but they do trigger
lots of showers and thunderstorms wherever they are and a slight drop
in humidity after they push to the south.

This afternoon the latest frontal boundary seems to be homesteading
from the Texas Panhandle to Kansas City, Chicago, Buffalo and even
into New England. However, it should also slowly push south and by
Wednesday morning it should reach extreme North Alabama and by that
time creeping along or trying to sit down and rest. By late Wednesday,
it may be down to near Montgomery and that will be the end of the
line. By the weekend, it will either start slowly back northward or
become completely indistinguishable.

SO, WHAT DOES ALL THIS MUMBO-JUMBO MEAN: We look for a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms tonight, but diminishing after midnight. The
system will still be producing a good array of storms tomorrow. We
believe that most of the storms, but not all, will be south of I-20 as
slightly drier air sneaks in. We think there will only be a few storms
on Thursday and Friday. But guess what? The moist air will start
fighting its way back north over the weekend and scattered showers and
thunderstorms will still be in our weather picture.

TROPICAL: The Atlantic Basin is finally coming to life. A tropical
wave was near the Windward Islands moving west. Any development should
be slow. Another tropical wave was 550 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles. However, way out in the Eastern Atlantic, the second
Tropical Depression of the season was moving west, but not showing
much change in intensity. It was about 350 miles west of the Cape
Verde Islands and moving west at 13 with highest sustained winds of 30
mph. This one should gradually grow stronger and could become Ana—the
first named storm—in a day or two.

FROM THE GRAB BAG: How about that 91-degree high in New York yesterday
—their first time this year the old thermometer has been that high. It
was over 100 yesterday in places like Fresno, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San
Antonio, Waco and Tulsa. The hottest of all was 108 at Needles,
California. This morning it was a very chilly 33 at Pahaska, Wyoming
and 28 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. Let us not mention that 98 below
zero at Vostok, Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly will celebrate her 7th
birthday later this month and I cannot decide what to give the little
girl. From day one, her favorite toy was a small blue spiked ball that
squeaks. She will chase that one all over the place favoring it all
over the others. She also likes a cloth soccer ball that one of our
readers gave her several years ago. She no longer has an interest in
toilet paper after completely covering our master bedroom one day
making it look like snow. That was only the first time out of two that
she got a spanking. Life goes on.
