IN THE COOL OF THE MORNING: Hope you were out early today. If so,
you felt a marked change in the air and the coolest temperatures since last
spring. Don't have near enough space for all the Alabama lows this morning,
but here is a selection:

45 in Belle Mina
46 in Florence and Valley Head
47 in Hartselle and at Russell Cave Nat. Monument
48 in Huntsville, Hamilton and Desoto State Park
49 at Decatur, Moulton and Athens
50 at Cullman, Ft. Payne, Hackleburg and Madison
52 in Albertville and Section
53 in Jasper, Fayette and Parrish
54 in Mentone, Collinsville and Gadsden
55 in Pinson
56 in Leeds, Reform, Crossville and Northport
57 in Birmingham, Helena, Talladega, Wedowee
58 in Tuscaloosa, Centreville, Rainbow City
59 in Eutaw, Livingston, Alexander City, Cheaha
60 at Anniston Airport and Clanton.

THIS WEEKEND: The recovery will be rather quick. High temperatures
will go back to, and persist in the mid 80s for the next several days. There
will also be a limited moisture return. There is a slight chance of a shower
Saturday but few, if any, after that and through at least next Tuesday. The
humidity will also increase.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Near perfect for tonight's high school games.
Clear with about 72 at kickoff falling into the 60s. College football
weather Saturday will also be good. Alabama meets Florida in Tuscaloosa.
Near 85 degrees at the 2:30 kickoff. Only a small chance of a shower. For
Auburn-South Carolina at Auburn and UAB-Rice at Birmingham, also only a
small risk of a shower. Temperatures around 79 for the 6 pm beginnings.

RACE WEEKEND: It is the big race weekend at Talladega. Afternoon
temperatures will be in the mid 80s both Saturday and Sunday. A slight risk
of a shower Saturday but most areas dry. We don't expect any showers Sunday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The large low pressure area over the NW Caribbean
has become better organized and showers and thunderstorms have increased.
Upper level winds, however, have become less favorable. The NHC still thinks
this will become a tropical depression during the next day or so as it moves
NW. We will watch it as it moves toward the SE Gulf.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Hope you saw the nice photo on the front page
of Section B of this morning's Birmingham News by Joe Songer. Shows some
Canada geese landing on Cosby Lake in Pinson...just another sign of a change
in seasons...a very cold 14 at Bondurant, Wyo., this morning for the
national low...11 degrees colder than Alaska's coldest of 25 at Barrow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had planned to drag Little Miss
Molly out of bed before sunrise to enjoy a nice cool half-mile walk. She
beat me to it. She dragged me out of bed and we were on our way just as the
sun peeped over the horizon. Sure was nice to see the Old Crow Motel back
lighted without any haze or fog. The heavy dew made the grass glisten with
the rising sun. We stayed out a long time and Molly had a ball. She even
chased some bright yellow butterflies that have suddenly appeared...we
expect to see some Canada geese fly over in "V" formation at any time, Last
year she even tried to reach up and paw one. Dumb dog. Life goes on.
