...A Wild Sunday...

GOOD MORNING: The National Weather Service in Jackson reported Sunday
evening that it had issued a total of 369 Tornado Warnings since Friday
night. I counted at least 34 tornadoes issued by the NWS Birmingham today
since noon. That's a lot of Tornado Warnings. All because of the remnants
of Hurricane Rita.

The low moved into northeastern Arkansas on Sunday and is still headed
northeast. A strong feeder bands associated with the storm rotated into
western Alabama during the afternoon hours and across the state overnight.
Thunderstorms in these bands on the periphery of dying tropical cyclones
often are energized by daytime heating and rotate like mad in the high wind
shear environment. That was the case on Sunday.

REAL LIVE SEPTEMBER TORNADOES: It is a rare event to have a September
tornado in Alabama. They are often associated with dying tropical systems.
There was an actual one on the ground for nearly 15 minutes across western
and northern Tuscaloosa Counties Sunday afternoon. It was captured live and
in color on ABC3340 towercam. James will have the video posted this
afternoon on the Blog. Injuries were reported at the Hilltop Trailer Pak in
Buhl. A house was destroyed near Elrod. A tornado was sighted on the ground
north of Cullman. There were several other reports of funnel clouds and
wind damage.

OUR WEATHER: The active feeder band will continue moving out of East
Alabama this morning. A cold front will move through the state in the wake
of the morning activity, shifting our winds around to the northwest. Less
humid air will gradually filter into the area starting tonight. Lows will
drop into the seasonable middle 60s tonight Nice weather will prevail
Tuesday and Wednesday. A significant cold front will move across the area
on Thursday. It will be accompanied by a few showers and followed by the
coolest air of the season.

DRIEST SEPTEMBER? So much for that idea. We have been saved by the
mini-drought busting rains of Rita. Radar estimates indicated 2-4 inches
of rain fell across parts of the area overnight.
