...Easterly Flow...

GOOD MORNING! Great weather is in store today when the green flag drops at
the Talladega Superspeedway. Skies should be at least partially sunny, with
increasing sunshine during the race. Temperatures will start out around 80
degrees, rising into the middle 80s by the checkered flag. The chance of
rain is nearly zero.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Our weather is dominated by an easterly flow
around high pressure that is centered over New York City and ridges
southwestward along the East Coast. An easterly flow over Alabama and the
South This is supplying plenty of Atlantic moisture. The result is the
morning low clouds out there across the area. They should dissipate a
little faster today, I think, and partial sunshine will be around by late
morning, with abundant sunshine by afternoon. Highs will rise well in to
the 80s. It's more of the same through Tuesday. Shower chances will be on
the rise Wednesday as moisture pools over our area ahead of a cold front.
The front will push showers and storms through our area on Thursday. Nice
weather builds in for the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: TD 20 may be Stan by the time you read this. It will exit
into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico later this afternoon. Continuing on a
westerly course, it will make landfall on the Mexican coast well south of
the U.S. border Tuesday evening. TD 19 weakened considerably last evening
and will have to get its act together if it is going to become a named
storm. We will be watching several developments over the next ten days,
including an East Coast storm, possible Gulf development and the possibility
of another large hurricane approaching the Bahamas and perhaps East Coast in
about ten days. Stay tuned.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Persistent northerly winds from nearly stationary
Hurricane Keith in the Caribbean pushed the water out of Chetumal Bay,
Mexico. Residents took a leisurely stroll across the floor of the bay,
exposed by the receding waters. Urgent advisories from the National
Hurricane Center warned that the waters might return suddenly, drowning the
unaware walkers. Fortunately, the waters returned gradually, and disaster
was averted.
