...A Few Showers Tonight; Cooler Tomorrow...
COLD FRONT ON THE WAY: The leading edge of colder air that has been
over the western half of the nation in recent days will move into
Northwest Alabama tonight, meaning we have some weather changes ahead.
Ahead of the front, a few showers should enter the northwest of part
of Alabama this afternoon, spreading over the northern half of the
state tonight. Moisture will be limited, and dynamics not overly
impressive, so at this time we figure rain totals will be on the light
side with most communities getting one-quarter of an inch or less. A
thunderstorm is not completely out of the question, but instability
values will be very limited.
TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The showers will end by midday tomorrow, and
as the showers move out of the state, much cooler air will blow in.
Some North Alabama communities will fail to reach 70 degrees tomorrow
with a cool northwest breeze. The sky will clear tomorrow night, and
the weekend will feature some fabulous fall weather with sunny days
and clear chilly nights. The high Saturday will be close to 70, with
low to mid 70s Sunday afternoon. Early morning lows over the weekend
will be generally in the 40s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, the sky will be
mostly cloudy with a chance of showers; temperatures will be falling
through the 70s, possibly reaching the 60s by the fourth quarter. For
tomorrow night's games, a jacket is in order; the sky will be clear
with temperatures falling from the 60s into the 50s. Saturday, Alabama
will host Ole Miss at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30 (CBS-TV); the
weather will be picture perfect with a sunny sky and a temperature
close to 70 at kickoff. Pretty much the same story for the Marshall/
UAB game at Legion Field in Birmingham (3:00 p.m. kickoff); lots of
sunshine with temperatures falling through the 60s.
OLE OMAR: Hurricane Omar moved across the Virgin Islands last night,
packing sustained winds of 105 mph. This storm will continue moving to
the northeast, into the open Atlantic, in coming days and is no threat
to the U.S. mainland.
Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Depression 16 is moving into
Central America from the western Caribbean; the main threat will be
from flooding and mudslides. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
FALL SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS: Yesterday was fall severe weather
awareness day in Alabama; our annual fall tornado season is in
November and early December; now is a good time to check your NOAA
Weather Radio, and review your family severe weather plan while the
weather is calm.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was
Anaheim, CA with 99 degrees. Coldest was Bettles, Alaska with 5 below
zero. The high yesterday in Bettles was 10 above zero, and the snow
depth is 9 inches. In Fairbanks, there is a three inch snow cover, and
yesterday's high was only 24.
