...Make Way For Thunderstorms...

A SIGNIFICANT ALABAMA WET PERIOD: A lot of weather parameters are
getting into an agreement to bring Alabama a substantial amount of
rain over the next several days. So much so that some parts of the
state, especially over the north and central part, could receive
somewhere between 3 and 5 inches. Some of our computerized guidance
points to more than 5 inches this week over NW Alabama. We do not
always swallow that guidance hook, line and sinker, but it is a useful
starting point for estimates. Be sure and check our day-by-day
forecast to get more complete details. In our latest forecast going
through next Friday, we have estimated a total of 4 inches of rain for
North/Central Alabama, generally along the I-20 corridor. We will be
able to better define this in the Tuesday morning edition. There is
also a good chance of showers and storms down south where rain totals
have not been that great. Through this morning, Montgomery has
received 3.61 inches of rain so far in July and Mobile 3.35. This in
contrast to 6.09 inches in Huntsville and 6.44 in Birmingham.

There could be some thunderstorms developing late today and this
evening, but we believe they will become more numerous as the day goes
on Tuesday and then a good chance every day all the way through the
weekend. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center does not have our area
outlined for a slight risk through Wednesday. In a situation like
this, we could have a few storms that require warnings and do not be
surprised to see some flash flood warnings over the next few days.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: It is too bad that with summer vacation
drawing to a close, that showers and thunderstorms along the Alabama/
NW Florida beaches will be numerous at times, at least through
Wednesday, and scattered ones each day beyond that. High temperatures
will be in the upper 80s along the immediate coast. Water temperatures
are plenty warm—mostly in the mid 80s. The Tropics continue quiet.
There is no hint of Ana (our first named storm).

ARICA, CHILE: This is our entry point of choice to discuss a few
global notes. Did you know that this town in the extreme northern
Atachama Desert of Chile only gets an average of 0.02 per year and
they once went 14 years without a drop? Back in the good old USA, New
York City got 1.30 inches of rain Sunday and they still have not had
90 degrees all year as their very cool summer continues. All the way
across the country, Phoenix has been above 100 all 26 days of July so
far with an average daily high of 109. Only 1/3 inch of rain this month
—most of that in one shower. They expect 114 the next couple of days.
Hottest yesterday 122 in Death Valley. Coolest this morning 60 in
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly did not get much
playtime over the weekend. I think the entire household ran out of
steam and just wanted to rest. The great grandchildren went back to
Russellville, which has given Molly time for some long daytime naps.
With our grandkids sleeping in the living area at night, Molly wants
to stay all night with them. Last night was typical. When I took Molly
for a midnight walk, she then refused a treat because she knew I would
take her to bed immediately thereafter. Instead, she hid behind my
chair against the bookcases and then hid under my coffee table. I
finally grabbed her and took her to the king-sized bed. She snuggled
against me all night—maybe to win some points. Life goes on.
