...More Showers And Storms...
WET IS THE WEATHER WORD: Showers and storms have been a bit slow
spreading into Alabama today, but this afternoon they were increasing,
especially over the southern third of the state. To our west, a line
of showers and thunderstorms, north to south through Central
Mississippi, was advancing eastward. Bottom line: our weather is going
to be on the wet side for the next several days.
The NWS/Storm Prediction Center continues a Slight Risk of severe
weather in North and Central Alabama from about Montgomery northward
for tonight. Also, do not be surprised to see a few flash flood
warnings overnight in the heavier rain areas. An upper-air low-
pressure trough, not a major one, was approaching the state this
afternoon. Some of the most plentiful moist air was over Mississippi
and Louisiana this afternoon. That will be shifting east and enhancing
our chance of getting some heavy rain amounts.
HOW MUCH RAIN: Some of our guidance points to as much as 4 to 5
inches over parts of North and West Alabama. We have sort of settled
on 3.50 to 4 inches across this part of North/Central Alabama. That is
the total that goes all the way through Saturday. We believe there
will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day,
especially through Friday.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Still no sign of Ana. You can always find a few
tropical waves out in the Atlantic this time of year. It is
interesting to note that a series of low-pressure areas moving
westward across Africa is a sign that the Cape Verde season of
tropical storms could be heating up soon. Some of those lows slide off
into the Eastern Atlantic already fairly well formed.
AT THE BEACH: No telling how many people will want to be at the beach
this weekend as summer vacations slowly come to a halt. There is a
good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day through Friday. They
may decrease some on Saturday. Highs will be in the upper 80s.
INDIANAPOLIS: That big city, right in the heart of Indiana, is one of
many in the Midwest and Northeast experiencing a relatively cool
summer. Their average high for July so far was 78.6. They have had
only 1 day out of the last 27 when the temperature was above average.
Around the rest of the country, 118 in Bullhead City, Arizona was the
hottest yesterday. In search of some cool temperatures, it was 39 in
Yellowstone National Park and Barrow, Alaska. It was 91 below zero at
Vostok, Antarctica. Major flash flooding this morning at Atlanta in NE
Texas with water in homes, people were evacuated and there were high-
water rescues. Texarkana 5.25 inches of rain today. 3.50 inches SW of
Jackson caused part of a roof to collapse injuring one person.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I am so busy that I wish Molly
would take her morning walk quickly. No such luck this morning. I
counted her movements and she left the walking track 27 times because
she sniffed something as much as 30 feet away. I am near certain the
little Community Rabbit was fooling around our back door last night.
Molly went berserk when we started our walk running in circles with
her nose practically in the grass gathering information. If I could
smell as good as Molly, I could probably smell a paper mill 100 miles
away. Life goes on.
