...Hurricane Season Starts Today...
SUMMER IS HERE: We have two big things starting today. Summer is here
and today was the first day of the 2009 hurricane season. The Gulf of
Mexico, the Caribbean and the Atlantic are calm and collected like
they are most of the time on June 1. The mathematical chance of a
tropical storm or hurricane being in progress on the first day of the
season is extremely small. The probability gradually builds up as the
sea surface temperatures get warmer leading to the prime season
occurring in July, August and September. Long-term records show that
tropical activity peaks around September 10 and starts a slow decline.
That is a long-term average and it can be very different from year to
year.
We had some hot temperatures Sunday afternoon including 92 in
Montgomery and 91 in Tuscaloosa, Mobile and Huntsville. The old
thermometer was heating up again this afternoon and temperatures had
already exceeded 90 in the Tennessee Valley, as well as Tuscaloosa,
Montgomery and Greenville. It is that time of the year where we will
see fewer and fewer breaks in the heat and humidity.
Having said that, we will get another break this weekend. Both
Saturday and Sunday should feature near total sunshine with highs
backing off to the middle 80s along with lower humidity and lows at
night in the low 60s.
RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER: We will have some showers and thunderstorms
before the niceties of the weekend. A few of those will show up
Wednesday, but Thursday looks like the main day. By Thursday, another
front is expected to push down to near the NW corner of Alabama
increasing the number of showers and thunderstorms. A few leftover
showers should still be around Saturday morning followed by clearing.
THE MONTH OF MAY: Not everybody had a wetter than normal May, but
most of the state did. Thanks to Michelle Miklik for assembling
numerous reports of May rain. There was rain on virtually every day of
the month and on many days the average amounts were substantial. For
example, on May 2 the average rain amount from 273 stations around the
state was 1.25 inches. At Coker in Tuscaloosa County, 11.57 inches of
rain in May bringing the 2009 total to 35.42 inches. If Coker gets
that much rain the rest of the year, they would wind up with over 70
inches. Of course, that will not happen.
GLOBAL ROAMING: The focus for severe thunderstorms tomorrow will be
in a long curved area from NW Texas NE and east to Indiana and Ohio.
It was 110 degrees in Death Valley yesterday afternoon. 29 this
morning at Bradford, Pennsylvania was the lowest in the lower 48
states. Coldest in Alaska was 26 at Barrow. We may end our little
contest guessing when the last snow would disappear from Whittier,
Alaska by tomorrow. Now down to 2 inches.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is one of the happiest
little dogs I have ever seen. Not saying that because she lightens up
our household. When the pizza man came the other night, I thought she
was going to scratch the paint off the front door windowpanes. She
scratches so fast that her feet are a blur and then she stops long
enough to try to sniff under the door to either smell the pizza person
or the pizza. Yesterday afternoon, on our little walk, Dino and his
mommy saw us pass and Dino zoomed through their backyard to play with
Molly. That absolutely makes the day for both of those little animals.
Life goes on.
