...The Alabama Story...

AT LEAST THREE DRY DAYS AHEAD: Rain amounts across Alabama in the
last 24 hours were extremely variable with a lot of places getting
none and other communities having flash flood problems. All that is
left over this afternoon are some diminishing showers over extreme SE
Alabama. They should be out of here by dark. Before we talk about
better weather ahead, let us give you a few sample rain amounts in the
last 24 hours:

4.75 in Evergreen
1.70 Highland Home
2.00 Jasper
1.16 Hamilton
2.01 Ider
2.61 Russellville Airport
2.33 Hytop (Jackson County)

The so-called cool front (really we should just call it a drier front)
has pushed through most of the state, so clearing will take place this
evening. It was already clear over the extreme northwest. Now we can
look forward to at least three days of mostly sunny weather. We expect
little or no risk of showers until Tuesday of next week.

If you get up at 5:00 a.m., like I will tomorrow morning, it will feel
great with about 58 degrees. As we have mentioned 25 zillion times,
dry air cools and heats faster, so we will have 90-degree heat in the
afternoon Sunday and Monday, but the humidity will be acceptable.
BIRMINGHAM: We had our first 90 degrees for 2009 Tuesday. That is the
average high for early July. We are still ahead of average in the rain
department by 8/10 of an inch, but it is dwindling rather quickly.
Even so, Lake Purdy is at full pool and so is Inland Lake—two of the
key water supplies for the area.

AT THE BEACH: Some of the nicest you can expect along the coast for
early June. Four days of mostly sunshine through Tuesday. The weather
should be dry, lower humidity on Saturday and little or no chance of a
shower or storm until about Tuesday and only few at that time. Highs
mostly in the upper 80s. The water temperature was 80 today at the
Mobile Coast Guard Station and also off Panama City and 79 off Orange
Beach and Pensacola Bay.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The Tropics, meaning the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf
of Mexico, are quiet. An update on the lady killed by lightning at
Fontana, California Wednesday. She was walking along the sidewalk when
she was struck by lightning and killed. It blew out the bottoms of her
shoes and hurled some of her clothing 30 feet. There were thousands of
lightning strikes in Southern California during that storm event. Only
1% of the lower 48 with a snow cover this morning, however, up to ½
foot of new snow is forecast in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains west of
Reno. 109 in Casa Grande and Gila Bend, Arizona was the hottest
yesterday. Coldest this morning 31 at Saranac Lake, New York and 30 at
Barrow, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the second day in a row, we scared
the daylights out of Molly. I had opened a 12-ounce can of delicious
and delectable Buffalo Rock at my desk and immediately knocked it
over. Fortunately, it did not get in the computer keys, but it got all
over me and flooded the area under my desk. I yelled real loud (no bad
words). Molly was sitting nearby and took off. Took a lot of paper
towels to soak it up. Little Miss Molly will have another weekend with
very little sleep. Our oldest granddaughter will have her little
babies here this weekend, ages 1 and 2. The living area will become a
beehive of activity lasting well into the night. Molly will spend much
of the weekend walking thorough the house trying to stay out of the
way. She will sleep long hours after the babies go back to
Russellville late Sunday. Life goes on.
