...Plenty of Rain...

A GENUINE SOAKING: Another low-pressure area continued to develop over the NW Gulf of Mexico south of the Louisiana coast this afternoon. That low will be our main weather maker for at least the next 24 hours. The center of the low should be over South Mississippi by daybreak Wednesday. It will be pulling a warm front northward into South Alabama at that time. By Wednesday evening, the warm front will be all the way through Alabama and we will have another cold front approaching from the west.

So, what does all of this complicated maneuvering mean for people in Alabama. It means a genuine soaking starting tonight. Rain was already widespread across South Louisiana and South Mississippi and rain had spread northward to cover most of the south half of Alabama. The track of the low-pressure area will determine how much rain we get and what kind of weather. This low is expected to move NE fairly rapidly—maybe to Kentucky by nightfall Wednesday. Rain will continue to overspread the rest of North Alabama this evening and become widespread overnight. By daybreak, much of Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston area will likely have over an inch in the bucket. An additional 2 inches of rain is possible for tomorrow. There will also be a few thunderstorms in the mix. We believe that any risk of severe thunderstorms will remain east and SE of our area. There will still be some rain in progress after dark tomorrow, but it should be ending.

Clouds will probably hang tough on Thursday. It will be breezy and a lot colder with high temperatures struggling to get out of the mid 40s. We look for mostly cloudy weather on Friday. By late in the day, some more light rain will be spreading up from the Gulf. Meanwhile, colder air will be moving in Friday night and the upper air temperature profile gives a possibility of a few snow flurries over NE and East/Central Alabama after midnight Friday night. Finally, clearing and cold weather can be expected on Saturday.

We believe our lowest temperatures will come Saturday morning with lows in the 26-28 degree range and maybe a few degrees colder in the NE Alabama valleys.

FLASH FLOOD PROBLEMS: The rain will be heavy enough to cause some localized flooding—even in the Birmingham area, but down south the National Weather Service has a Flash Flood Watch for tonight and tomorrow for much of the south half of the state.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for the remainder of today and tonight in places like New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile and Pensacola. For tomorrow, the Slight Risk expands to affect SE and East/Central Alabama and most of Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Third morning in a row that my little 9-pound nuisance, sometimes known as Little Miss Molly, had me out walking before the first coffee had reached the bottom of my tummy. We were amazed the moment we stepped out the back door to hear a crow talking at the top of its voice. Seconds later a middle-aged cardinal came out of the hedgerow and flew right over Molly. Those were the first birds we have seen all week. We had our heaviest frost so far this season, so after we walked halfway on the track, she voluntarily turned around and headed back home where she knew a Milkbone treat would be waiting. She immediately went to the patch of sun near the front door for her usual sunbath. A creature of habit. Life goes on.
