...Wet and Breezy Today; Colder Tomorrow...

WET IS THE WORD: Rain continues to fall over much of Alabama this morning in response to a deepening surface low moving inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The low will move to a point near Huntsville by early afternoon, and accordingly much of the heavier rain will be east of Alabama by mid-afternoon. We are projecting storm totals of 1 to 2 inches for North-Central Alabama; the heavier totals should be over the southern half of the state, where some spots could see 3 to 4 inches of rain, and a flash flood watch remains in effect for today. A few severe thunderstorms are possible this morning over the southeast part of the state, with the risk including cities like Dothan, Ozark, and Abbeville. The most significant severe weather risk with this system will be over North Florida, South Georgia, and the eastern part of the Carolinas, where a few isolated tornadoes are possible. We shouldn't have any severe weather issues up here with cool and stable air in place.

TURNING COLDER: As the rain moves out late today, a surge of cold air moves into the state tomorrow and Friday. More than likely we won't get out of the mid 40s both days with lingering clouds and a chilly north breeze.

SNOW FLAKES? Another wave of low pressure is forecast to develop in the Gulf of Mexico Friday, and will spread some moisture up into
Alabama Friday night and Saturday morning. While the deepest moisture will remain well to the south, we could very well see a few light snow flurries around here in the general time period from midnight Friday night through 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Moisture looks very limited, so they are not expected to pose any problems at this time.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The sky should become mostly sunny Saturday afternoon as the new surface low moves to the northeast, but temperatures will remain cool with a high in the 45 to 48 degree range. Looks now like our coldest morning will come early Sunday when temperatures are expected to drop into the 28 to 32 degree range. Then, with a partly to mostly sunny sky Sunday, we will climb into the mid 50s around here. Clouds will then return Sunday night, and some rain is likely by Monday afternoon of next week.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Two to four inches of snow was reported on the ground around El Paso, Texas yesterday morning as their early winter storm finally moved out. Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Northway, Alaska with 14 degrees below zero. The low at West Yellowstone, Montana was two below zero.

ON THIS DATE IN 1925: A very late season hurricane moved across the Florida peninsula then moved up the Atlantic coast, making landfall again at Cape Hatteras NC. Extensive damage was reported in Florida. Winds gusted to sake force along the Atlantic coast all the way to New England. A wind gust to 64 mph was reported at Atlantic City NJ.
