...The Weather Turns Active...

COLDEST SO FAR FRIDAY MORNING: As December approaches, we are not surprised to see the weather become more active. December can traditionally be a fairly wet month and it often brings our first significant freeze, although that can also happen some years in November.

Last night a southeast-moving cold front pushed a rather wide band of showers across the state. This afternoon most of those had shifted to South Alabama and it was turning noticeably cooler over the north. Rain amounts were quite variable. Samples:

0.73 Huntsville Airport
0.85 Muscle Shoals
0.51 Clay/Pinson (Womack Road)
0.06 Birmingham Airport

Not counting the rain last night, it still amazes me that Scrougeout in NE Etowah County has received 74.95 inches of rain this year with 87.78 inches in the last 12 months dating back to this date last year. At Coker in Tuscaloosa County, the 12-month total stands at 73.85 inches. Mind you, in a typical year it would be more like 52 inches.

THE REST OF THIS WEEK: Using as few words as possible, morning sunshine Tuesday, but more clouds late and more rain by late at night. We are looking for a big rain event on Wednesday. It will be widespread and heavy at times along with a few thunderstorms. Our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, has a hand in this as a low-pressure area will form over the North Gulf and move up into SW Alabama and possibly may track across the Birmingham area. Those systems almost overdosed with moist air. Thursday should be blustery and colder and you will need a coat all day with highs only in the 40s. We are looking for our coldest weather so far this season when you get up Friday morning. A lot of places will have mid 20s with the valleys a few degrees colder. By Saturday morning, a high-pressure area will be centered across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and it could be a few degrees colder.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 87 at McAllen, Texas was the warmest in the USA Sunday…cold spots this morning included an even zero at Stanley, Idaho…in Alaska, it was 17 below at Ft. Yukon…Barrow was dealing with weather on the 8s with a high of 8 above and a low this morning of 8 below…we have a daily reader at Hunter Street Baptist Church that loves Whittier, Alaska. They have 11 inches of snow…the morning snow survey showed 13% of the lower 48 covered with snow compared to 21% a month ago…a couple of the heavier amounts included 202 inches at Squaw Flat, Idaho and 181 inches at Rabbit Ears, Colorado. I simply love those place names.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Wish you could have seen my Little Miss Molly Saturday when she made her first official visit to Pet Smart in Trussville. They welcome dogs to visit. Molly was astounded, scared—you name it. She kept looking back at me hoping I was there to protect her. Soon after, I was waiting in the car with Molly while the majority owner entered another shop. A guy drove up and parked next to us with a big cat in his arms. Molly tried her best to jump out the window and chase that cat. No luck. Life goes on.
