...Colder and Colder...
GENUINE WINTRY WEATHER: I see very little indication of any short-sleeve shirt weather in the near future. In fact, starting tomorrow and extending all the way through a week from now it looks cold. It may be a week where the shivering backdoor thermometer may not get out of the low 40s even in daytime for an entire week. Here in Central Alabama, we look for our coldest temperatures to start Saturday and continue through the weekend and well into next week. By Saturday morning, the low should be about 24 and then from Sunday through at least Tuesday morning, the low should be in the teens.
Do not be surprised to hear of some morning lows as cold as 10 or 12 degrees in some of the valleys of NE Alabama. We think that after the few flurries late tonight and early Friday, the weather will be generally dry through the weekend.
WHY MUST WE SUFFER WITH THIS COLD: The North American weather profile is taking on a genuine wintry look. I was scouting around in Alaska and Northern Canada this morning and I discovered a temperature of 42 below zero at Watson Lake, Yukon. The surface pressure in the Yukon has built to 1041 mb (translation: a strong high). Cold Arctic air will stream southward in batches during the next week. By late tomorrow the cold front, that will move through our area early tomorrow, will be down in South Florida. Projections are for Sunday morning for some of the colder air to reach all the way across Cuba. That means we will be deep into the cold air here in Alabama.
SNOW FANS DISAPPOINTMENT: Do not see any significant snow during all of this. The light rain in our area this afternoon and tonight could switch over to a little bit of light snow after midnight, but no accumulation. So, let us get ready for a long haul of cold weather. Some of those night low temperatures translate to a damaging freeze. It is time to definitely check your outside plumbing and protect any plants that are fragile and please, please, do not forget your dogs and cats. If it were me, I would not hesitate to bring my dog inside, even if he weighed 90 pounds. Fortunately, our Little Miss Molly weighs only 8 pounds.
ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Cold temperatures this morning included 12 below at Houlton, Maine and 31 below at Ft. Yukon, Alaska...a bad day in good old Deadhorse where the temperature was 23 below and a wind chill of 41 below...over in Siberia, it was 54 below at Ojmjakon, which bills itself as the coldest continuously populated city on earth.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn is in Tampa to play Northwestern in the Outback Bowl tomorrow. They have had good weather for the past several days, but a good chance of showers tomorrow with game-time temperatures in the middle 60s.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had another restless night. As soon as she went to bed late last night, she heard it raining on the roof. She is so smart that she translates rain to possible thunder and lightning. So, she goes ahead and goes to one of her numerous safe places. She spent most of the night under the bed. It is now early afternoon and she is still asleep. She swiped my National Geographic blanket and curled up on it. Later this afternoon she will be gung-ho for a 25-inning ballgame and by that time I will be too tired. I will make it up to her tomorrow. Life goes on.
