...Who Left the Door Open?

ARCTIC PIPELINE CANADA TO ALABAMA: The big wide barn door is open all the way from Alabama northward to the Canadian Yukon and Alaska. Checking the old barometer this morning, we found a 1044 MB strong high-pressure area centered over Western Canada. This is the source region of some very cold arctic air. Parts of the Northern USA are already in a deep freeze and it will get progressively colder here in Alabama over the next several days. Between now and toward the end of next week, this will clearly be our coldest weather not only so far this season, but in a long time.

Let us urge you to proceed with protective measures for several hard freezes in a row at night and not very much warmth during the daytime--things like outdoor plumbing, pets and plants. None of my business, but I highly recommend that you bring all of your pets indoors at night even if it turns your house into a zoo. Also check on elderly neighbours and relatives.

The colder air started pouring into Alabama early this morning. There was some scattered light rain overnight, but we did not hear of any snow. It will be clear tonight with a hard freeze by morning with lows averaging around 23 across Central Alabama. The Sunday morning low should be near 20. Our colder temperatures will be Monday morning and Tuesday morning when it will be around 15 and during that time do not be surprised to hear of some lows between 8 and 10 in the NE Alabama valleys. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will not get out of the mid 30s.

THE SNOW SITUATION: We certainly do not want to raise expectations very much, but the latest data we have shows a low-pressure area forming over the Gulf of Mexico and moving NE. It should be centered south of the Alabama coast early Thursday. All of this with a big arctic air mass already in place. There may be some chance of a snow event late Wednesday night and Thursday. It is entirely too early to be specific. We, of course, will watch it closely.

ROAMING THE WORLD: Over on the other side of the North Pole into Siberia, it was 54 below zero today at Ojmjakon. Remember, south of the equator they are well into summer, so I was not surprised to see Nyang Station, Australia reporting 112 degrees today. Back in the good old USA, 61% of the lower 48 had a solid blanket of snow. The Central Plains and Midwest are included and cold arctic air pouring southward from Canada moving across that snow can lower our high temperatures 3 to 5 degrees below what the models think. It was 26 below zero this morning at Williston, North Dakota and 35 below at Bettles, Alaska. Just gotta mention good ole Deadhorse: they were reporting 17 below with snow and blowing snow, 41 mph wind gusts and a wind chill of 50 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the third night in a row, Little Miss Molly was awake much of the night. It all started when I took her out for a bathroom walk at 11:00 p.m. She immediately heard two distant and very faint fireworks sounds. No bathroom for her. She rushed back to the front door wanting in. As the night went on, she was shaking and had that scared look in her eyes. I picked her up and held her in my arms a long time and finally got her to go to sleep. I sure do feel sorry for her. Life goes on.
