...Rain Returns Wednesday...
MUCH COLDER BY NEW YEAR'S DAY: Our weather is on the move. It is not staying the same for any length of time. Just think, two more days from now, we will be exactly one-third of the way through the winter. We still have two more months to try to figure out when there will be a snow threat or none at all. After that we get into March and April, which on a long-term basis is our most active severe weather season.
Pity your poor weather people. Not much chance of too much relaxing over the next several months, but we do not mind. That is what we are here for. Now back to the present. It was below freezing this morning in almost all of the 67 counties in Alabama. We list these few colder temperatures:
19 Hamilton
20 Pinson
22 Concord/Hueytown, Fayette, Dora, Muscle Shoals
23 Moody, Coker, Huntsville, Jasper, Livingston
24 Cullman, Winfield, Tuscaloosa, Sylacauga
25 Muscadine, Birmingham
The weather stays dry tonight, although clouds will gradually move in and thicken. It will not be quite as cold tonight with lows near freezing or slightly lower in many areas. Tomorrow some rain will reach Central Alabama by afternoon and it should become widespread over most of the state Wednesday night. The rain will still be around Thursday morning, but diminishing late.
FOCUS ON NEW YEAR'S DAY: The latest model runs suggest a chance of some light snow or flurries early Friday morning, mainly over the northern counties. As the day goes on, it will be clearing, windy and a lot colder. By Saturday morning, we will have some of our coldest temperatures so far this season with an average low of 22 across Central Alabama and maybe some upper teens in the NE Alabama valleys. Sunday morning lows could be 1 or 2 degrees colder, however, at least the weekend will be dry.
Another low-pressure area is taking shape in the west and southwest and it will move toward the east and northeast.
USA HIGHLIGHTS: The snow survey this morning showed just under 59% of the lower 48 states still had a snow cover. The blanket of snow is no longer solid across Northern Texas, but from parts of Oklahoma it is solid northward to Canada. Oklahoma City still has about 5 inches of snow on the ground and Des Moines nearly a foot...in the Northern Cascade Mountains of Washington State, the snow is so deep that if it all melted suddenly, it would produce the equivalent of 45 inches of rain...cold temperatures this morning 22 below at International Falls, Minnesota and 20 below at Northway, Alaska.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Almost jerked off my feet again as soon as I was out the door on my morning walk with Molly. Two days ago she found a cat sitting under our Bradford pear tree in our backyard. The cat saw Molly and dove under a wooden fence nearby. Molly was right behind him and she disappeared all except her little rear end and swishing tail. It took a long time to get her under control. This afternoon she went into the hedgerow where she likes to do a number one to irrigate some of the dead twigs. Her leash got hung on a twig and when she finally pulled it loose, the twig backlashed and hit Molly in the rear end. It scared her so badly she jumped all the way across the walking track and headed toward the back door where Dino lives. Then she turned around and gave me a look as if I had hit her. Life goes on—sometimes with a lot of excitement.
