CALM AND COLLECTED: That probably best describes our weather for the
next five days. It looks dry all the way at least through Monday, with
quite a bit of sunshine every day. The nights will be chilly, but
afternoons will be comfortable for early February with most highs
hanging close to the 60-degree mark. Even though we could still use
some rain, I believe every single person in Alabama would vote for
this dry weather in order for cleanup to continue in the tragic
tornadoes. It looks like our next chance of rain will be toward the
middle of next week about Tuesday night and Wednesday, but more so on
Wednesday.
THE TORNADO STORY: Last news report I saw indicated about 55
fatalities in that major February 5 and early February 6 tornado
outbreak. Tennessee was hardest hit. Here in Alabama, it appears the
final death toll will be four. Three of those were in Lawrence County
and one in Jackson County. It appears that the Jackson County tornado
was the most powerful one in the state and has been tentatively rated
as an EF4. Quite often, when tornadoes strike in the irregular terrain
of extreme NE Alabama, they are not the stronger ones. This was an
exception. This one struck near the small community of Rosalie.
TONIGHT IN ANNISTON: It is the second chapter of Storm Alert 2008 at
the Anniston City Meeting Center at 7:00 p.m. The doors open at 5:00.
The entire ABC 33/40 weather team will be there and admission is free.
SNOW REPORT: As much as 19 inches of snow fell yesterday over parts
of Northern Illinois. They have really caught it this year. In Chicago
at O'Hare Airport, nearly 5 more inches fell yesterday bringing their
total for this season to 41 inches. Normal, by February 7, is 24
inches. At Rockford, Illinois, they got 10 inches yesterday. They have
had 58 inches so far this winter—an excess of 32 inches. Out west,
10-18 inches is expected tonight in the Northern Wasatch Mountains of
Utah with some places getting 24 inches. In Colorado, 18 to 36 inches
of new snow is forecast on the NW basin slopes in places like Rabbit
Ears Pass and Vail Pass. All of this with 50 mph wind gusts. 10 more
inches of snow overnight at Alta, Utah with 126 inches now on the
ground.
COLD WEATHER REPORT: I am very impressed with how long the bitter
cold is holding on in the Far North Country. It was 61 below zero this
morning at Chalkyitsix, Alaska and 60 below at Ft. Yukon. It was also
60 below at Mayo in the Canadian Yukon. Nome, Alaska has 46 inches of
snow on the ground. Fairbanks was reporting 46 below with freezing fog
and a wind chill of 66 below. Even James Spann would wear a coat and a
hat in that.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little 9-pound pal, sometimes known
as Little Miss Molly, is over joyed to get her ball field back.
Translation: the main living area of her home. That is where she has
had literally hundreds of exciting ballgames in her life. Yesterday
she noticed that we had piled all of her toys, which includes about 7
balls, in her little bed. She ran across the room and dove into the
pile of balls and slung them everywhere. She made sure she drop kicked
some of them so they rolled up against my feet so I would play. After
a vigorous ballgame, she went on one of her famous energy explosions.
For 5 to 7 minutes, she raced around the house so fast that her tail
was sticking out behind her and you could hear her claws digging into
the carpet when she changed direction. Life goes on.
