...Calm Through The Weekend...

DRY DAYS AHEAD: After a historic tornado outbreak Tuesday night and
early Wednesday morning, a calm weather pattern returns to the Deep
South for the rest of the week. We expect ample sunshine today across
Alabama with a high in the mid 50s, right at average values for
February 7. The dry weather continues tomorrow and Saturday with a few
scattered clouds and afternoon temperatures up in the low 60s. Then,
over the weekend, a shot of colder air drops into the state on
Sunday, which will knock the afternoon high down to near 50 degrees by
Sunday. The colder air will also be dry, so the dry spell continues
all the way through the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: The latest medium range computer model data now holds off
the next chance of rain until around Thursday of next week, when a few
thunderstorms could be involved.

DEATH TOLL CONTINUES TO RISE: As of last night, the national death
toll from the tornado outbreak was up to 54 after two more victims
were found in Tennessee. Fatalities were reported in four states; four
here in Alabama, 13 in Arkansas, 7 in Kentucky, and 30 in Tennessee.
The newest deaths were reported in Sumner County, Tennessee, where two
victims were found outside a house that had been blown away by the
storm.

ABC 33/40 meteorologist Brian Peters, who is part of a special quick
response team on call by the National Weather Service, was dispatched
to Jackson County, in Northeast Alabama, yesterday, and helped to
determine that the tornado that moved through the area between Pisgah
and Rosalie was an EF4 on the enhanced Fujita scale. One person was
killed by this tornado, and the estimated wind speed was 180 mph.
Brian reports this was the worst damage he was seen since the April 8,
1998 F5 tornado in the western part of Jefferson County. The maximum
path width was 3/8 mile.

The other three Alabama fatalities came in Lawrence County, near the
community of Aldridge Grove. The NWS rated this tornado as an EF3 on
the enhanced Fujita scale. There were 20 to 25 injuries in association
with this storm.

Farther to the south, an EF2 tornado moved along a region near the
Fayette/Tuscaloosa County line, and then into Walker County. Some of
the hardest hit areas included New Lexington, Berry, and Oakman. There
were some minor injuries, but many people were able to hear the
tornado warnings and moved to a place of safety.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour will be at
the Anniston City Meeting Center tonight… we begin at 7:00, but the
doors open at 5:00. Come early and meet the weather team; you will see
some amazing Alabama weather stories, and have a chance to win some
great prizes. No admission fee; bring the whole family!
