...Nice Weekend...
On the weather maps this morning, we find a minor trough
in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere swinging across
Alabama. This trough is carving out a deeper large scale trough over
the eastern United States. As the disturbance swings by, a dry cold
front will push through the area. Winds will swing around to the
northwest and pick up during the day. But the sun angle is increasing
and the days are getting longer. Our heat budget is on the increase,
so despite the northwesterly winds today, temperatures will not be
much different than yesterday with highs topping out around 60 degrees
this afternoon. Tonight will feature clear and cool conditions with
lows in the lower and middle 30s. Sunday will be another nice day,
with abundant sunshine and highs about the same as today.
START TO THE WEEK: By Monday, high pressure to the
north of Alabama will be shifting to our east. Meanwhile, an upper
trough will be swinging through the Plains states. Monday will
feature winds veering to the southeast, partly cloudy skies and
temperatures in the lower 60s.
SHOWERS AHEAD: Caught in the squeeze between strong high
pressure to the east and the approaching trough from the northwest,
our southerly winds will increase on Tuesday, giving us a breezy and
warmer day with highs in the 60s to near 70. Humidity levels will be
increasing and showers and storms will pick up to the west and
northwest of Alabama. A disturbance at the southern end of the trough
will begin to close off in one of our dreaded upper lows. At the same
time, a surface low will form over southern Louisiana. This low will
take a more southerly track, traveling along the Gulf coast. Showers
will spread into Alabama from the southwest by Tuesday afternoon.
Rain will increase during the overnight into Wednesday. The upper low
will not kick out until early Thursday, so clouds and light rain might
be with us until noon on Thursday.
HEADING TOWARD THE WEEKEND: Cooler and drier air will
spread into the area Thursday night and Friday. Another disturbance
will develop along the Gulf coast over the weekend, but most of the
showers should stay to our south. Big weather systems will bring rain
and storms around the 19th, 21st and 24th.
THE BEGINNINGS OF OUR WEATHER SERVICE: "Be it resolved
by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of
American in Congress assembled that the Secretary of War be, and
hereby is, authorized and required to provide for taking
meteorological observations at the military stations in the interior
of the continent and at other points in the States and Territories of
the United States for giving notice on the northern lakes and
seacoasts by magnetic telegraph and marine signals, of the approach
and force of storms." This new law signed into effect on this date in
1870 by President Ulysses S. Grant created a national weather
service. The first observations would be transmitted the following
November 1st and storm warnings issued for mariners on the Great
Lakes. Read all about it in my weather history post on our
alabamawx.com blog.
