...Rain Moves Out This Afternoon...
RAIN TAPERS OFF THIS AFTERNOON: We begin the day with rain and
thunderstorms across the state; we are still projecting storm totals
between one and two inches. The good news is that the air will be
relatively stable, and we don't expect any organized severe weather
problems. The rain will end from west to east during the afternoon,
and it now looks like most of the rain will be out of the state by
7:00 this evening. Clouds will linger through the night, and
temperatures will turn cooler with a brisk northwest wind.
THE WEEKEND: I sure get the idea clouds will hang tough over much of
North Alabama tomorrow; if we are lucky we might see some sunshine
tomorrow afternoon, but no promises. The day will be rather blustery
with a brisk northwest wind and temperatures holding in the 50s all
day. The sky will clear tomorrow night, and Sunday will feature ample
sunshine and a high close to 70 degrees.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: We are now confident the rain will be over for most
of the high school games around the state tonight, although some
lingering light rain will be possible during the first half for
stadiums near the Georgia border. Otherwise, the weather will be
cloudy and cool with temperatures falling from the low 60s into the
50s by the fourth quarter.
Tomorrow, UAB will be in Huntington, West Virginia to play Marshall at
11:00 a.m. A good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm with a
kickoff temperature of 60 degrees. Tennessee plays Alabama at 2:30
p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, expect gradual clearing
during the game with a kickoff temperature around 60, falling into the
mid to upper 50s at the final whistle. Auburn will be at LSU for a
6:30 p.m. kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Clear and cool
weather is the story with 63 degrees at kick off and falling into the
50s during the second half.
NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will pass through Alabama early in the
week, but there is very limited moisture place. It might bring a
shower or two Monday night, but rain should be light and spotty. The
weather looks dry and mild Tuesday and Wednesday, but another storm
system will bring rain and storms back to the state before the week is
over, on Thursday, Friday, or maybe even both days.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Thunderstorms brought 2.36" of rain to
Shreveport yesterday; a few tornadoes were reported over the southern
half of Louisiana. A tornado touched with in the community of Elton,
Louisiana, uprooting trees, blowing down power lines and overturning
at least one tractor-trailer traveling on Interstate 10. Hottest place
in the nation was Santa Ana, CA with 94 degrees; coldest spot was
Buckland, Alaska with 0 degrees. Coldest in the "lower 48" was
Shirley Basin, Wyoming with 14.
TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic remains quiet, and tropical storm
formation is not expected through the weekend. Sea water temperatures
have cooled into the upper 60s near the Gulf Coast, pretty much
eliminating the risk of a major hurricane around here.
