...Preview Of Winter...

A SPARKLE IN THE AIR: This afternoon you could fly from New Orleans to
Birmingham to Charlotte to Washington to New York and Boston and not
see a single cloud. Back in the 1960s, we had a nervous private pilot
that used to visit our weather office frequently for aviation weather
briefings. He would call a day like this severe clear and we got to
where we would call it too. The reason for the sparkle today is a big
high-pressure system centered over Chattanooga, but it extends all the
way from the Louisiana coast to New York. The high being over us all
night allowed the wind to go calm and there was some scattered frost,
especially in the NE Alabama valleys and some of the frost was
moderate to heavy. The colder overnight temperatures were also in that
area, including 27 at Grantley in NE Cleburne County, 28 at Muscadine
and 29 at Scrougeout and Broomtown. In Jefferson County, Pinson had a
low of 30 that tied the record for October 19. (We have a long list of
morning lows posted on the 33/40 BLOG.

NOW WHAT? Look for another cold night, but with temperatures not as
low as last night. There could be some scattered light frost again by
daybreak and maybe some moderate to heavy frost in the colder NE
valleys. We believe the average low temperature tonight will be 3 or 4
degrees higher than last night. Tuesday and Wednesday will be most
enjoyable with chilly early mornings, but milder afternoons. The next
clouds will move in Wednesday night.

NEXT RAIN AND STORMS: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will reach
the area Thursday, possibly later in the day, but becoming more
numerous Thursday night. We look for widespread showers and
thunderstorms on Friday and rain may be heavy at times. Do not be
surprised that later Thursday through Friday, Central Alabama could
get 2 inches more rain. We certainly do not need that, because as of
today Birmingham was still showing a surplus for the year of 15.11
inches. Actually, some of the moisture for our next rain event
Thursday and Friday may come from Hurricane Rick that will be moving
into Baja, California. By Thursday, a new low-pressure area will be
centered over Arkansas and Missouri and also headed east.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Over the weekend, Hurricane Rick became a super
hurricane—a Category 5 with sustained winds of 180 mph. That is
enough to destroy almost everything. Fortunately, he will continue to
weaken before moving into Lower California. He was down to a Category
1 late this morning. No problems in the Atlantic Basin, which includes
our friend, the Gulf of Mexico.

AROUND THE GOOD OLD USA: The Great Smoky Mountains had some very low
temperatures this morning, especially on Mt. LeConte where it dropped
to 17 on that 6,400 peak after a high of only 23 Sunday. Coldest in
the USA was 17 at Saranac Lake, New York and the coldest in Alaska was
1 above at Ft. Yukon.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Did you know that there is an estimated 8
million bolts of lightning striking this old world every day? A lot of
them have amazing temperature of 54,000 degrees.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had me out very early
this morning in a 36-degree temperature and visibility so great I
believe we could have seen to Chattanooga. There was frost in the
grassy area, where she likes to roam. The Old Crow Motel stood out
sharp and clear with the early rising sun. Molly did not seem to get
cold and it was not cold enough for me to wear a coat or even a long-
sleeve shirt. Molly missed seeing her dear friend, the little Yorkie
Dino, yesterday and this morning, but she stopped behind his house and
cried for him to come out. Life goes on.
