...Back to Dry...

A lot of disappointed faces out there across this parched land that we
call North and Central Alabama. Our best chances for rain in some
time produced some brief heavy rains in some area, but some areas got
very little. In actuality, the amounts were generally between one
half and one inch, or very close to what was predicted. But I think
that we were all disappointed that heavier amounts were not more
widespread. Now we go back to mostly dry for a few days.

BACK TO DRY: Drier air will be flowing into Alabama today in the wake
of the trough. This will have one benefit…some comfortable readings
overnight tonight. By tomorrow morning, lows will be in the lower 60s
in many locations, with some upper 50s in the normally cooler valleys
of North Alabama. Small consolation. Sunshine will return quickly
today, and the mercury will rise to near 90 in most locations. Mostly
sunny conditions will prevail Thursday and Friday, with nearly no
chance of rain. We will be in a northwesterly flow aloft, and that
sometimes holds surprises in store for us in the form of thunderstorm
complexes that migrate out of the Midwest.

WEEKEND: We see hints that an organized disturbance will try to work
its way in here late on Saturday, bringing a slight chance of showers
and storms during the overnight hours. It looks like a boundary might
be hanging out for Sunday, keeping a chance of showers and storms in
the forecast for then, also.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEK: High pressure off the Atlantic coast will be
positioned such that we will see a nice flow of moisture off the Gulf
of Mexico by the start of next week. This of course means heat and
humidity, but it also means that we will see at least scattered daily
convection each day. The GFS is optimistic that another decent trough
will be able to invade the area late in the week and given us a period
of enhanced shower and thunderstorm chances.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: A major hailstorm pounded Denver International
Airport, damaging 93 commercial planes and causing the cancellation of
hundreds of flights over the next several days. There were two minor
injuries. Over 14,000 holes and cracks were punched in the flat roofs
of the terminal buildings by the hail that was up to 2 inches in
diameter. Over 4000 automobiles received hail damage.

THE FARGO TORNADO: A deadly and destructive tornado ripped through
Fargo, North Dakota on this date fifty years ago. The tornado is
especially important because it was studied by Theodore Fujita. He
collected hundreds of photographs and home movies of the tornado and
used them to produce a landmark study of a tornadic supercell. More
