DRY WEATHER ALL WEEK, BUT SOME COLD NIGHTS: Plenty cold across
Alabama early this morning. Overall, it was the coldest morning we
have had this season. Here are a few samples:

15 at Belle Mina located just NE of Decatur
18 at Union Grove and Eva
19 in Hamilton and Vinemont
20 in Decatur, Russellville, Scottsboro and Valley Head (See our blog
for a complete list)

Other lows across the north were in the low and mid 20s. It was 23 in
Birmingham and 26 in Anniston, Tuscaloosa and Talladega.

Lows tonight will be just as cold—maybe a degree or so lower, but
when you wake up tomorrow morning, the wind will be practically calm
and not a biting wind like it was this morning. Look for moderating
temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday. However, on Thursday another big
surge of colder air will move down across the snow pack in the
nation's midsection and into the SE. That will send our temperature in
a nosedive again with low to mid 20s for Friday morning. We do not
expect any rain at least through Saturday.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: That was an unbelievable winter storm that
covered a large area from North Texas into the Great Lakes last week.
Reports are that as many as 250,000 are still without power in the
metropolitan St. Louis area. There was still 13 inches of snow on the
ground this morning at Rochelle in NW Illinois and their low
temperature was 5 below zero. Based on satellite surveys, about
one-half of the lower 48 states are now covered with snow, including
North Texas, all of Oklahoma, Missouri and Illinois and down into NW
Arkansas. This means that cold winds from the NW do not have to travel
that far to reach Alabama after traveling across the snow pack. This
can have an effect on our temperatures, especially daytime highs…the
temperature sank to 26 below zero this morning at Lake George,
Colorado and 39 below zero at O'Brien Creek, Alaska. There is 41
inches of snow on the ground at Lena Point near Juneau and 54 inches
atop Eagle Crest, Alaska.

IT CAN SNOW IN DECEMBER IN ALABAMA: Most everyone remembers the big
New Year's Eve snowstorm in 1963 that brought 20 inches of snow to
Florence and nearly a foot to the Birmingham area. Back in 1886
between December 4 and 6, Montgomery had their greatest snow ever with
11 inches. We have sparse reports in those early days, but I would not
be surprised if places like Cherokee County in NE Alabama got about 20
inches. 25 inches fell at nearby Rome, Georgia.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I have been on a
week-long safari. It seems that one single housefly found its way into
my office and it has been following me around from room to room and
even landing on my keyboard and my arm. I have slapped at it leaving a
red spot on my arm, have used a flyswatter and a rolled up newspaper
to no avail. Little Miss Molly even got into the hunt. When the fly
would get closer to the floor, she would leap up and try to grab it.
Molly is semi-mad at me because of lack of playtime. But, life goes
on. ..
