BELOW FREEZING ABOUT 15 HOURS TONIGHT: Our long-advertised arctic
cold front was moving SE rather quickly through Central Alabama this
afternoon. Look for generally the coldest temperatures so far this
season tonight and Friday night. Welcome to Autumn in Alabama!
Officially, winter is still two weeks away.

Here in Central Alabama, we project the temperature to fall below
freezing by around 8 o'clock tonight and remain below freezing until
around 10:00 tomorrow morning. By daybreak, it should be near 18 as an
average across Central Alabama. Some of the valleys will be a few
degrees colder. The wind will not completely die down overnight, so it
is going to feel extremely cold. It will also be breezy Friday as
temperatures struggle to reach the mid 40s. Saturday morning lows
should average around 19, but there will be quite a variation between
the valleys and the ridge tops with the latter being the warmest. A
warming trend will start Saturday afternoon and continue into early
next week. It still looks like our next chance of significant rain
will be the middle of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The high school championship games will be at
Legion Field starting this afternoon with more games on Friday and
Saturday. For tonight's game, which starts at 7:00, it will be near
freezing near kickoff and dropping to about 26 by 9:00 p.m. It will be
breezy. The next game will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday. It should be sunny
and about 43 at kickoff, but in the 30s in the second half and not as
windy. For the Friday night game starting at 7:00, light winds, clear
and cold, 27 at kickoff, about 22 at the end. Saturday games will have
much nicer weather. The first game is at 11:00 a.m. Sunny with 47 at
kickoff warming to about 50 in the 4th quarter, not much wind. For the
3:00 p.m. game, clear with a light wind, about 53 degrees at kickoff,
cooling to about 42 late in the game.

A PERSONAL NOTE: You bet, I remember Pearl Harbor Day. I was 9 years
old and I distinctly remember the program interruption on WJRD Radio
in Tuscaloosa for a flash. In those days, it was called a Flash
Bulletin, not a special report. My dad had already gotten me
interested in world events before he was killed in a work-related
accident. I followed WWII as close as possible by listening to WJRD in
daytime. They signed off at sunset, so I depended heavily on CBS Radio
News from WWL in New Orleans. I read every word about the war in the
Tuscaloosa News and the Birmingham Age-Herald, which arrived one day
late by mail. There was no TV in Havana Junction or anywhere else in
those early days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our little friends, known as dogs and
cats, sure do have some interesting habits. Little Miss Molly's food
and water dish are in the kitchen on the tile floor, but she insists
on eating her meals on the carpeted living area. I believe she assumes
it is a giant tablecloth. She will make numerous round trips to her
dish and get one or two pellets of Science Diet dog food and walk some
10 feet back to the carpet to eat. They are so interesting to watch.
We took Little Miss Molly to the vet in Argo this morning to update
her shots and have a physical. She is in great shape and we are
thankful. Again, she started shaking as soon as we got in the car. She
knew exactly where she was going. Life goes on....
