...Rain Returning Tonight...

Boy, what a difference a day makes. Yesterday, we were basking in
record warmth. Today, everyone is pulling their jacket a little
closer as they hurry to where they are going with highs in the 50s and
a chilly north wind. It is mainly dry across North Central Alabama,
but signs of unexpected change are underway to the southwest.

SHOWERS BACK IN THE FORECAST: The surface front that moved into
Southeast Alabama overnight and this morning found itself stranded
when its support ran off and left it. The strong upper trough
hightailed it to the northeast and is over New England this
afternoon. Meanwhile, the front found itself parallel to the upper
flow and slowed nearly to a stop. Meanwhile, a weaker trough is
spreading east from t he Plains into the Mississippi Valley this
afternoon. This trough is firing up showers and storms over
Louisiana and southern Mississippi. They are heading northeast. In
fact, the advance guard is already into Southwest Alabama. The rain
will overspread South and Central Alabama overnight. The northward
extent is uncertain, but it appears that I-59 will be a good defining
line for the solid rains. North of there, there will be less. South
of a line from Livingston to Calera to Anniston, I think there could
be a little thunder mixed in overnight

RESET – THE WEEK AHEAD: The clearing that we expected overnight will
be delayed until tomorrow morning. It will begin in the southwest and
spread northeast through the morning hours. After morning lows in the
lower 40s, highs tomorrow should still be able to make the lower 60s.
We should then stay clear through most of Tuesday, clouds returning in
the afternoon. Look for a light freeze Tuesday morning in some
spots. Highs on Tuesday will be a few degrees warmer than Monday.

PROGRESSIVE PATTERN: Canadian high pressure building into the
midsection of the country will usher in colder air on Wednesday.
Highs might not get out of the 40s in some spots, and there will be a
chill north wind. New Years Eve celebrations will be under clear
skies and cold conditions. Thursday will be a transition day, with
southerly winds increasing in response to another approaching trough
and developing surface low to our west. Rain will reach western
Alabama Thursday evening and overspread the state through the night.
The models are hinting at some healthy rainfall amounts, with about
three quarters of an inch in most spots. The rain will depart before
the cold air arrives, so no threat of wintry weather. Another wet
weather system arrives just after the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: One passenger was killed and 63 injured aboard
a United Airlines 747 flying from Tokyo to Honolulu when the aircraft
encountered clear air turbulence. Clear air turbulence is very hard
to predict and often strikes with little warning. It usually occurs
around the edges of the Jet Stream and near mountain ranges. It is
like a big pothole in the sky, shaking planes violently and often
causing them to drop large distances. Over 100 people are injured in
turbulence related incidents in the U.S. each year, a very small
amount considering there are 23,600 commercial flights each day, but
injuries can still be serious.
