WETTING DOWN THE GREAT ALABAMA COUNTRYSIDE: and its going to be an
extensive wetting too, with many sections of the state in line to get
a soaking heavy rain. In fact, some of the latest guidance suggests
that parts of Central Alabama could receive more than 3 inches of rain
in this storm system. The main culprit is a low pressure area that
will be moving out of the Southern Rockies across Oklahoma and
Arkansas. By midday Friday, the low should be centered near Nashville
and then curving NE. This is going to bring all sorts of moisture from
our main source region, the Gulf of Mexico. The severe weather threat
does not appear to be major, but about the south half of the state,
from about Tuscaloosa southward, it outlined for a slight risk on
Friday.

The timeline on the rain: radar indicated some patchy rain today, but
it was not touching the ground. The air over Central Alabama was
extremely dry—up to 15,000 feet. Some of that rain will start reaching
the ground tonight, however, especially after midnight. The rain will
become more widespread Thursday, continuing Thursday night and into
Friday afternoon. The most likely time for significant heavy rain will
be Thursday night and Friday morning. By Saturday, cooler air will
move in from the NW, but the clouds may persist until afternoon.
Sunday should be almost all sunshine. We don't see any major change to
colder over the next five days.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave 900 miles east of the Windward
Islands was moving west, but not showing much promise. Over in the
East Pacific, Tropical Storm Paul will make landfall on the central
part of the Mexican coast tonight.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The most sparsely populated county in the USA
is Loving County in West Texas. It is just south of the SE corner of
New Mexico and only 62 souls live in the entire county, which is about
the same size as Bibb County here in Alabama. It is a windy county and
dust storms are not uncommon. In fact, we had to find a motel in Pecos
one night just south of that county due to a blinding dust storm.
There was only one room left in town in an old motel and the dust came
through the windows and under the door. There were fleas in the bed
and even a grasshopper in the room. I got up and slept in a chair.
Next morning there were piles of tumbleweed against the motel…record
low of 38 in Jacksonville this morning and 47 in Orlando…lowest in the
USA was 8 at Embarrass, Minnesota and zero at Chandalar Lake,
Alaska…the same big storm that will wet down Alabama will cause
blizzard conditions late tonight and tomorrow morning over SE
Colorado. Both Colorado Springs and Denver could get heavy amounts of
snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I both went to
the beauty shop today—separate ones, of course. I needed a haircut
badly and Molly needed a trim. The minute we got in the car she
started shaking. She seems to automatically relate getting in the car
to going to the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). I wonder if she remembers
trip when the vet took her motherhood away. She shakes with fright all
the way, but she is calm on the way home and jumps up and down with
delight when she sees her house…she had me out before sunrise this
morning. It was clearly the most beautiful sunrise in at least six
months. A layer of altocumulus insured that. No stick this morning. We
think the attack dog left the community.
