INCREASING CHANCE OF RAIN EARLY NEXT WEEK: Wonder if Mother Nature
is beginning to realize what she has been doing to us? People were
cheering all over the state yesterday and last night at the increase
in showers and thunderstorms. There are increasing indications that
we have a better chance of rain starting as early as next Monday
night and especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. In fact, one of the
weather models that we tend to lean on the most shows a good chance
of showers and storms next Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday.

That does not mean that we will not get some earlier. We think a few
will show up on Monday and we expect some to affect part of the area
this afternoon and this evening. Scattered storms were increasing
across much of the state this afternoon and some of them were dumping
locally heavy rain—mostly because of their slow movement. Radar
indicated around 2 inches of rain had fallen around Alexander City by
early this afternoon and there were more strong storms in the area.

We do not have room to list all of the significant rain totals from
yesterday and last night, but well over 1 inch fell at Sylacauga,
Sycamore and at Shelby County Airport, just to name a few. Shannon
Reece in Gordo, said that her two children, Taylor and Nathan, were
so excited about the rain that they were playing in it like it was snow.

After today's storms, we should dry out Saturday and Sunday and
temperatures will go back up. Sunday will probably be our hottest day
with highs in the mid 90s.

THE DROUGHT STORY: The most recent U.S. Drought Monitor has
enlarged the Exceptional Drought designation in Alabama to include
everybody from I-20 northward. This means places like Tuscaloosa,
Birmingham, Anniston and Gadsden northward to the Tennessee border. A
big part of Central Alabama is under an Extreme Drought. It will take
a long time to erase the huge rain deficits across the area.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Along the Alabama-NW Florida coast,
look for typical June weather through the Father's Day weekend. There
will be scattered showers and thunderstorms each day, but still a
good bit of sunshine. The showers and storms should become more
numerous by Tuesday. High temperatures will range from 88 to 92. In
the Tropics, showers and thunderstorms are more numerous than usual
over the NW Caribbean and part of Cuba. However, the National
Hurricane Center canceled the scheduled reconnaissance flight into
the area, because the activity had become less organized and
pressures were rising.

MY TINY CORNER: I think my little girl is reverting back to her
youth. The little rascal is getting up earlier and earlier. She
immediately makes a sweep of the whole house to make sure everything
is in order, then she is ready to go outside. We were walking soon
after sunrise and it felt cooler. The 0.14 rain that we got yesterday
was swallowed up by the earth so quickly that it was like me taking
one sip of coffee. I want to tell a story early next week about how a
couple with two large dogs trained them to not be the least bit
afraid of thunderstorms. I will ask permission first. Life goes on.....
